Grade 2 News

Welcome to our latest Year Level Newsletter. Students have settled back into routines quickly following the Term 1 holidays, and it has been wonderful to see such a positive start to the term. We have already witnessed significant growth across our Grade 2 cohort, reflecting the strong learning environments and engaging opportunities being fostered throughout our school this year. With reports coming up at the end of the term, we are continuing to support students in demonstrating their learning and progress across all curriculum areas. We are incredibly proud of the effort the students have shown and look forward to celebrating their achievements.
It has been great to see the student’s enjoyment for reading on display, now that the library is operating. Once a week, students will be able to borrow and return their library books, so please ensure students are bringing their reader satchels to school. Without a reader satchel (or library bag) students will be unable to borrow books.
What we have been learning in Grade 2 this term:
Maths: We are nearing the end of our unit on additive thinking. Students have been learning a range of strategies for adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. These include the Jump Strategy, Split Strategy and Compensation Strategy. Teaching these strategies has enabled students’ multiple different solutions to solving equations. Students have expressed lots of enjoyment within this unit and we will continue to build on their addition and subtraction skills throughout the year.
English: This term, we have continued to focus on expanding our sentences in writing to make our pieces more engaging and detailed. Currently, students have been learning to apply the use of commas when writing 3-4 items on a list in a sentence. Students have continued to develop their ability to add descriptive language (adjectives), use subordinating conjunctions and include more information to enhance the quality of their writing. The hard work from Term 1 has really been on display with their writing in Term 2!
Humanities: Our topic this Term has been around the geography of Australia, more specifically describing ‘Where we live’. Students have learnt ways to describe the location in which we live by describing landmarks we are near, far from and next to. Using tools such as Google Earth, we have explored Tarneit and the surrounding areas to develop their understanding of maps, location, and features within their community. This has been very informative for the students, but also for some of us teachers who are not from the area!
