Grade 1 News

Good afternoon Grade 1 Families,

It  has been wonderful to see students return from the school holidays refreshed and ready for a fantastic term of learning. The Grade 1 team has been impressed by the positive way students have transitioned back into school routines and the effort they are already demonstrating in their learning. We would like to thank families for your support in helping students begin the term so successfully. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term ahead. 

Classroom Snapshot

English

Beginning in Term 2, students have been learning the long vowel sounds /ow/, /oi/ and /ir/ as well as split digraphs /a_e/, /e_e/ and /i_e/. Students are continuing to develop their skills of applying these sounds to their reading and writing. In Literature, students began the term learning about ANZAC Day and applied their knowledge of adjectives to describe how the characters are feeling in the text. Additionally, Students have been working on recounts, using the terms ‘first’, ‘next’ and ‘finally’ as well as upleveling their writing to include the Five Ws (who / what / when / where / why). 

Maths 

Looking at Additive Thinking, students have been building their skills in solving addition and subtraction equations using various strategies such as Doubling +1, Bridging and Split Strategy. Students' effort in Maths across this term has been fantastic and we can see their confidence growing in tackling maths equations each lesson.

Humanities

This term, students have been learning about the Early Australian Explorers. They have explored Dreaming stories by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and learned the importance of acknowledging the Bunurong people who lived on the land Wimba Primary School resides on. Students have also been learning about the voyages of James Cook and Matthew Flinders. 

SEL

In Social and Emotional Learning, students have been learning about identifying and describing personal strengths. Through thoughtful discussions and purposeful activities, students demonstrated skills of teamwork and kindness as well as beginning to understand their likes/dislikes and strengths. 

Library

 Students have loved finding books by their favourite authors and personal interests during our library sessions this term. Students have had the opportunity to borrow up to two picture books from the library. Please ensure students are bringing their reader satchel to school to ensure books are being protected and they have the opportunity to return their current books and borrow new ones. 

Reminders

• Please label all items of school uniform to ensure a quick return if they are lost
• Please continue to encourage your children to complete their homework. This is reading for 10-15 minutes every night and recording it in their diaries. Many students are approaching 100 nights of reading and we are so proud of their hard work!
• Please send all fruit snack in an individual container separate to the lunchbox, this is to allow it to be placed on the students' desks throughout the day without taking up too much room. 
• Hats are no longer a requirement for outdoor play
