Foundation News

Dear Foundation Parents/Guardians,

We are already in Week 4 of Term 2 and the students have continued to settle beautifully back into their learning routines. It has been wonderful to see their confidence, independence and enthusiasm growing each day across all learning areas.

In English (Phonics), students have continued learning new sounds and are now working through Sound Sets 3 and 4. They have been introduced to the graphemes (letters) ck, e, u, r, h and b and their corresponding sounds. Students are continuing to blend these sounds to read and spell simple words such as duck, mum, ram and back. It has been fantastic to see students becoming more confident readers and writers. Students have also started gaining exposure to sentence writing. This week, they practised reading and writing sentences such as ‘Get the gas can’ and ‘The cap is red.’ Students are now beginning to write these sentences in their writing books. 

By now, your child should be bringing home their reading satchel with decodable readers, as well as their chosen library book. Daily reading at home supports students in developing their reading fluency, increasing confidence, and fostering positive reading habits. Please ensure that reading satchels and library books are returned on your child’s library day so they can return and borrow new books regularly.

In Literature, students have begun exploring nursery rhymes and traditional tales. This week, we focused on The Three Little Pigs. Students identified the characters, explored the structure of the story (beginning, middle and end), and practised retelling the story to support the development of their vocabulary and oral language skills. 

In Mathematics, we have continued exploring numbers from 0–20, including counting forwards and backwards. Students have also been practising addition using number bonds, number lines and counters to support their understanding of early addition concepts. 

In Humanities, we have started our new unit on The Five Senses. Students have already explored the senses of smell and taste and enjoyed describing different smells such as sweet, spicy, stinky, fresh and strong. They also tasted foods with different flavours including salty, sour, sweet and bitter. The students have loved these hands-on learning experiences. 

In ICT, students have started learning how to use iPads safely and responsibly in the classroom. They have been introduced to the rules and expectations around using technology and have begun using the Little Learners Love Literacy program to support their phonics learning. 

Fruit Snack Reminder:

As part of our daily routine, students enjoy a fruit snack break to help keep them energised and focused for learning.  We kindly ask that fruit snacks are packed in a separate container from lunch boxes, as large lunch boxes can take up valuable desk space in the classroom.

Class dismissal, please collect your child from the classroom. As Foundation students are still learning school routines and safety expectations, they are not permitted to walk through the school gates independently and must be collected by an adult from the classroom door. Thank you for your support in helping us keep all students safe.
