Teaching and Learning

Hello Wimba families,

It has been a fantastic start to the term. Our students have been engaged in lots of different learning and are consolidating their learning from the past term.

English

Today I wanted to provide families with an insight into what students learn in the English block at Wimba. Our English block has been developed looking at evidence informed practices that research has proven is effective in teaching students how to read and write. Reading and writing are the foundation of most subjects in education.

Our students have 2 hours of English each day. This time is broken up into specific parts to explicitly teach our students different aspects of English. There is a focus on developing reading skills such as learning individual sounds, blends of letters to make sounds, knowing what words mean, and also writing such as vocabulary, writing sentences and writing a complete piece with paragraphs. Our students in grades 5 and 6 also complete work around novels.

We have specific aspects to the English block to ensure that we are developing the foundational skills that all students need to be successful in their education long term. We also understand that learning is a complex task and that by explicitly teach students in small chunks of learning helps students learn better.

It is important that at home our students continue to engage in reading. Reading the world around them helps them put into practice that skills that they are learning at school and continue to become more proficient in their reading skills.

We are looking forward to seeing our students continue to make learning growth and be able to celebrate their learning across the rest of the term.
