Careers

Hello Parents/Guardians and Community Members,

This term is proving to be another busy term full of important careers events. Please see the summary of recent events and upcoming event details outlined below.

Narrandera Shire Youth Council

Skills & Industry Workshops

We are very fortunate to have multiple Industry Skills Workshops this term, organised and coordinated by Nyoka Prior – Youth Coordinator of Narrandera Shire Council under the ‘Where Do I Go from Here Project’.

These are all amazing opportunities for our students to connect with industry representatives and expert TAFE teachers to gain confidence and new skills for life and future employment.

All Female Welding Workshop

29th April – 1st May Narrandera TAFE CRC

A group of our female students participated in a three-day workshop in welding. This trades-based training allowed students to explore and develop welding skills and confidence in the Metal Fabrication trades. The highly successful and empowering workshop aimed to encourage more females into traditionally male dominated trades in a safe and inclusive setting. Our students absolutely thrived in the supportive environment of this small group and came back to school full of confidence, and wanting to explore work experience to further their experience. Students all worked well together to create a beautifully crafted bench seat which Nyoka and students have arranged to have presented to the Narrandera Hospital to add to the public seating for patients and community members of Narrandera. Well done, Ladies! We wish to thank Nyoka as well as TAFE Teacher Craig Hill for this amazing opportunity.

This upcoming workshop will be for male youth of Narrandera Shire and interested students from Narrandera High School. This trades-based training will cover safety, welding techniques and practical project-based learning under the expert tuition of our TAFE Teacher Craig Hill and hopefully students will be able to explore and develop welding skills and confidence in the Metal Fabrication trades. We cannot wait to see our students participating in this workshop.

Upcoming Horticulture & Gardening Workshop

This upcoming one-day workshop will be for all Youth of Narrandera Shire and interested students from Narrandera High School are encouraged to come see Mrs Ing to put their name on the list. Students must be over 15 years of age and have a Unique Student Identity number – Which Mrs Ing can assist students to obtain. There are 20 spots for this course, so get in quick to gain your spot in this fantastic opportunity.

Once again, THANK YOU NYOKA!

TAFE YES Program

Welding

Last week another group of students also commenced a TAFE YES Program in Metal Fabrication & Welding which was in addition to the courses listed above. This TAFE YES Program was organised by our TAFE Services Coordinator at Narrandera TAFE – Sheridan Scalli. As you can see, these industry areas have a shortage of skilled workers across Australia and so that is why TAFE have also put on these opportunities for our students to gain skills and confidence in this industry. Thank you to Sheridan Scalli for all the advocacy and coordination in providing these opportunities to our school.

RIEP Workshop - Be a Health Hero

Workshops 5th & 6th May & 2nd & 3rd June at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital & CSU:

Our first group of students has participated in the first workshop of the Be A Health Hero Program in Wagga Wagga. With the second group session coming up on 2nd and 3rd June, our Year 10 students attend these two-day workshops at both Charles Sturt University and at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. The highly successful program called ‘Be A Health Hero’ is organised and funded by our Regional Industries Education Partnership Officer Stacey Suidgeest in partnership with MLHD staff, CSU Staff and Three Rivers Health. This unique program enables students to explore all aspects of health careers and provide hands on practical experience in the areas of Nursing, Allied Health and Medicine. The workshops are held at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and Charles Sturt University Wagga campus.

As you can see, our students had an amazing two days talking to Health professionals, CSU lecturers, Interns and Health Students as well as participating in hands on workshops both at CSU and at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital where staff were incredibly generous with their time and support in providing students real-world healthcare scenarios and practical activities to gain in-depth insight into the many and varied health careers. We cannot wait for our second group of students to attend in June!

SAFEWORK White Card Construction Safety Courses

Two Virtual Courses to be held on 18th & 19th June and 20th & 21st June.

We have confirmed the dates for the next two virtual White Card Construction Safety courses this term for 18th & 19th June as well as the 20th & 21st June. Students from Year 9 upwards can undertake this training and must be over the age of 14years old.

We have a list of students on the wait list, so I will be confirming with each student if they are intending to attend this course due to the rules of SafeWork we can only host 15 students in each course.

The courses are completely subsidised by the Department of Education and so there is no cost for the course itself. However, the SafeWork Licence Card does have a cost of $30 for each student.

*All students will need to obtain a Unique Student Identifier Number to participate. I can assist students to obtain this online but will require them to bring in a photo of their Medicare card to obtain this USI. Or students can obtain this themselves by accessing the following website:

Year 12 Careers Pathway Interviews

University Early Entry are open for all Year 12 students.

We have commenced our Year 12 Careers Transition Interviews this term and I encourage all Year 12 students to book in for their careers planning interview with me. These comprehensive interviews take a minimum of two lessons and are tailored to each student to ensure they have a clear plan and information for their transition to post school life.

Students who are looking at university pathways are encouraged to organise their interview as soon as possible so they can have guidance on the various early entry processes offered by each university and how they can respond to the specific requirements of each university and course they aspire to study. If parents would like to attend these meetings, they are welcome to reach out to the careers office to book an appointment after school hours. All parents and guardians are sent a summary of the meetings with their child if they cannot attend in person.

University of Canberra UC4 Yourself Day

Wednesday 3rd June

This year our senior students can registered to attend the University of Canberra Campus Experience Day. This will be on 3rd June. Students will receive an email with the link to register for the chosen activity workshops and need to do this as soon as possible, so they do not miss out on activities. This will be a fantastic opportunity for senior students to see university life an learn more about the various courses UC has to offer. Any interested students should register via the link sent to their school emails and let me know they intend to go so I can organise the bus and logistics as soon as possible. This will be a one-day excursion leaving early in the morning and arriving back at nighttime.

Western Riverina Careers Expo

Leeton High School

Next month our Year 10 group will head over to the Western Riverina Careers Expo at Leeton High School. This expo is an important opportunity for students to begin to gain important information for their upcoming subject selections for their senior studies.

Careers Expos allow students access to the many employers, tertiary providers, and organisations to explore careers opportunities, courses and discuss firsthand with industry experts all aspects of modern career and employment opportunities across the state and in our region.

I encourage all of year 10 to attend this event.

All Careers Events

All these opportunities are always announced to students at our morning assemblies, year meetings and in our newsletters. Any student or parent who has any questions in relation to these activities are welcome to contact the careers office for further information.
