Principal's Message

As we move through the middle of the school year, it has been wonderful to see our Knowledge and Literature Rich Curriculum come to life across the school. Developed throughout 2025 and now in its first full year of implementation, this curriculum has provided students with rich opportunities to build knowledge, deepen their understanding of the world around them and develop strong literacy skills through meaningful and engaging learning experiences.
Research consistently shows that reading comprehension is strengthened when students have a broad base of background knowledge. By intentionally integrating Literacy, Humanities and Science our students are not only learning to read but reading to learn. Through carefully selected texts, historical inquiry, geographical investigations and authentic learning experiences, students are building the knowledge and vocabulary that support deeper thinking, stronger comprehension and improved communication skills.
Throughout Term 2, students have been immersed in a range of engaging inquiry units.
Our Prep students explored Our Caring Community, a History-based unit that helped them learn about the important people and services that support our community. Students were fortunate to participate in incursions with members of the local Fire Brigade and the Royal Flying Doctor Service, providing valuable real-world connections to their learning.
Year 1 and 2 students investigated Global Celebrations, exploring how different cultures and communities celebrate important events and traditions. This History-focused unit encouraged students to appreciate diversity and develop an understanding of the customs and celebrations that bring people together around the world.
Year 3 and 4 students undertook Growing Up on Country, integrating History and the cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures. Through their study of the novel Walking the Boundaries, students explored themes of identity, connection to Country and the experiences of First Nations peoples, developing both their historical understanding and literary comprehension.
Meanwhile, our Year 5 and 6 students explored Caring for Country, a Geography-based unit centred on the management of places and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority. Through their study of the novel Bindi, students examined different perspectives on caring for the environment, sustainability and the deep and enduring connection First Nations peoples have with Country.
A highlight of the term was the opportunity for both Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 students to visit Willum Warrain. This excursion provided a powerful and authentic learning experience, allowing students to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal culture, history and connection to Country through direct engagement with community members and cultural practices.
We were also incredibly proud to be involved in the launch of the Monash University Intergenerational Playground at the Belvedere Hub. Over the past two years, Seaford Park Primary School has partnered with Monash University researchers throughout the design and development process. Our students explored early prototypes, tested equipment and provided valuable feedback that helped shape the final design. We were delighted that our students were among the very first to experience the completed playground.
Intergenerational playgrounds are designed to bring together people of all ages, creating opportunities for children, older adults and families to connect through play, movement and shared experiences. These spaces support physical wellbeing, social connection and community engagement, while helping to strengthen relationships across generations. We extend our sincere thanks to Monash University and the research team for including our students in this innovative project. Partnerships such as these enrich our educational programs and provide unique opportunities for students to contribute to real-world initiatives beyond the classroom.
As a school, we remain committed to continually improving and refining our practices to ensure every student has access to the highest quality learning experiences. Through strong community partnerships, evidence-informed teaching practices and a commitment to innovation, we look forward to continuing to provide outstanding opportunities for all students at Seaford Park Primary School.
Warm regards,
Stephania Johnson-Turner
