Wellbeing at OLSC
Promoting Healthy Sleep Habits:
Sleep is essential for your child’s development, both physically and mentally. However, with busy schedules, screen time, and other distractions, it can be challenging for children to get the rest they need. These children may be irritable, disruptive or generally hyperactive and restless. A lack of healthy sleep has been linked to mental health problems, poor growth, excessive weight gain, and reduced school performance.
It is recommended that children aged 5 - 13 year are getting are 9 - 11 hours of sleep a night.
Ways to Promote Sleep Routine
- Establish a Consistent Routine: A predictable bedtime routine helps signal to your child that it’s time to wind down. Activities like reading, taking a bath, or listening to calming music can be part of this.
- Limit Screen Time: Exposure to screens (TV, phones, tablets, iPads) before bed can interfere with sleep. Aim to avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime.
- Create a Calm Sleep Environment: Make sure your child’s bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool. A comfortable bed and minimal distractions will make it easier to fall asleep.
- Set a Regular Sleep Schedule: Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day (even on weekends) helps regulate your child’s internal clock.
- Mind the Diet: Avoid giving your child sugary snacks or caffeine in the afternoon or evening, as these can disrupt sleep.
CYBER SAFETY - Keeping Safe Online
Over the past few weeks, students from Prep to Year 6 have participated in live online learning sessions through Inform and Empower. The program covered topics such as making smart screen time choices, understanding the internet, online rights and responsibilities, and recognising the difference between public and private posts. This program is aligned with the Child Safe Standards, ensuring that children and young people are informed about their rights, actively participate in decisions that affect them, and are protected in online environments.

Positive Behaviours for Learning
As part of our ongoing development as a PBL school we continue to explicitly teach & model expectations from our matrix.
The foci for the next couple of weeks are:
Respect:
We use kind words and actions
We allow others to learn
Responsibility:
We keep our hands, feet and objects to ourselves
We are ready for learning
Resilience:
We work cooperatively
We accept challenges and work hard to reach them
These expectations will be explicitly taught during Wellbeing Hour & revisited throughout the week. It would be great if you could also reinforce these expectations at home and ask your child/children how they are following these at school.
If you have any concerns please contact Sandy - shenderson@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au or Kiah - kmiles@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au Alternatively you can phone the school office.
Cheers
