Learning Centre Four

National Clean-Up School Day

On Monday, students from Prep to Grade 6 participated in National Clean-Up School Day, contributing to our school's sustainability goals. Armed with gloves and trash bags, the students worked in class teams to pick up rubbish around the school grounds. Their teamwork and enthusiasm made the event a success, as they helped improve the school environment and learned the importance of keeping our surroundings clean. This hands-on activity was a great way to promote environmental awareness and responsibility, fostering a sense of pride in caring for our school community.

Year 5

Literacy:

In week 5 and 6 of Literacy, we have continued to explore the author Graeme Base - we looked at the story The Tree where students made predictions about the story as well as looking at the different emotions experienced by the main characters. Furthermore, we have made our way towards the concept of fact and opinion. Students have been identifying the difference and expressing their own known facts and opinions.

Numeracy:

In Numeracy, students have explored the topic of Number focusing on multiples and factors. In week 6, we have been working in different groups with different teachers where we drew our attention towards Multiplication and Division. Students have been working collaboratively to solve and create their own number sentences.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry, we have been learning about physical activity. We investigated the effects that physical activity has on our body as well as the benefits. Topics which we have been learning about which underpin this are; Cardiovascular fitness, Strength and Weight Training, Stretching and Recovery, Sleep. Students have participated in a “fitness challenge” and they have created their own mini workout program.

Religion:

In Religion, we have been learning about Mass and the elements which feature in Mass. From the information we have learnt, students are working in groups and creating a presentation which they will present to their peers. We have seen some great planning, thoughts and ideas towards this project.

Wellbeing:

In Wellbeing, we have reflected back upon the PBL Matrix. We have had engaging discussions about the Matrix and spoken about how parts of the Matrix should look, sound and feel when we adhere to it. Week 5 focused on emotions, where we put ourselves in the shoes of someone in a particular situation and explained the emotions we would feel in this situation.  In week 6, students were required to complete the Social-Emotional Wellbeing (SEW) survey.

Special Events:

Inform and Empower: As part of Digital Citizenship, students focused on their online rights & responsibilities and how the law can keep them safe. They were informed how to block/report other users and how to seek help. As part of their responsibilities they are being reminded to follow the rules (home/school/website/law), to think about the impact of their actions on other people and to protect their personal information.

Year 6

Literacy:

We have been reading the Australian Dreamtime stories, including The Rainbow Serpent and Sea Country, to analyse characters and plot structure.  We continue to write our narratives, focusing on following the traditional plot structure of rising action, climax, falling action, and the resolution of conflict.  In grammar, the students investigated the types of sentences: simple, compound, and complex.

Numeracy:

We are learning to understand and describe the properties of prime, composite, square and triangular numbers.  Students used factors and divisibility to identify prime and composite numbers less than a hundred. They are further learning to use the order of operations to evaluate multiplication, addition and subtraction expressions.

Inquiry:

Students labelled the parts of a male and female reproductive system. They became familiar with the many body changes that occur around the time of puberty and completed a list of the changes that are different in boys and girls.

Religion:

We have been learning about the practice of Visio Divina and how to use art and images as a way to deepen our relationship with God. Students reflected prayerfully on pieces of religious art like the Crucifixion and the Annunciation, following the steps of Visio Divina. They were invited to connect the meaning of the image to their own life and faith. Students compared the Lectio Divina and Visio Divina to identify similarities and differences and reflect on both experiences

Wellbeing:

We discussed examples of desired behaviour with reference to the school Positive Behavior Matrix and what the behaviour would look/sound/feel like. We recognised positive, negative and mixed emotions and discussed the way certain events and situations trigger shifts between positive and negative emotions, as well as instances of greater intensity in ‘highs’ and ‘lows’. Students referred to the ‘emotional intensity’ word list to show how different words can be used to show differing levels of emotional intensity.

Special Events:

GRIP Student Leadership Conference. Our Year 6 Leaders joined Beth, Scott and Bec in travelling into the city by train and participating in the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre. Students learnt many new skills about being a leader, interacted with other student leaders from around Melbourne and even brainstormed things they could do as leaders to impact others in a positive way!
