Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two
Greetings from the 3/4 team. The past couple of weeks have continued running smoothly for our students as they move past the middle of term. We have enjoyed some exciting events and are getting ready for some more busy weeks ahead.
Special Events
In the last two weeks we have had our first whole school assembly, Clean Up Australia Day, Shrove Tuesday, and Ash Wednesday. It was great to see all our students showing our school values as they participated in the assembly very respectfully and celebrated their achievements. Clean Up Australia Day was very successful and our groups worked very hard to responsibly clean up the oval and vacant space at the front of the school. Shrove Tuesday was also very successful as all our students enjoyed some delicious pancakes made by some of our wonderful parent helpers. During Ash Wednesday our students respectfully observed the liturgy and reflectively began the season of Lent.
Literacy
In literacy our Year 4s have been reading about influential people throughout history. They have learned about their lives as a stimulus to help them make mind maps to present information, writing summaries to concisely share their learning and practice revising and editing their work.
Our Year 3s have finished their look into Mem Fox books with The Magic Hat and have started reading through some Jory John books. They have been practicing their comprehension skills of these short stories to help them practice their narrative writing. They have also been learning about sentence structure to help them improve their writing.
Numeracy
In Numeracy our Year 4s have been finishing their work with fractions by looking at converting and ordering fractions. They have now started to move into learning more about time. They have been learning to convert between analogue and digital time, understand elapsed time, and make connections to how we use time in our day.
Our Year 3s have been finishing their work with addition and subtraction by learning to add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers using number lines and partitioning skills. They have also been trying to apply their learning to equations with unknown variables. They are now beginning to look at time and are starting to look at formal units of time, how to measure them, and how to make reasonable estimates of time.
Inquiry
In Inquiry our Year 4s have been linking to their literacy work by continuing to research influential people throughout history. They have been practising their inquiry skills by looking into the challenges these people faced in their lives, how they overcame them, and what their efforts have given to the world we know today.
Our Year 3s have been continuing to look at themselves and their part in groups by learning more about respect and others. They have been identifying what respect means to them and how it can affect the way they feel. They have also been exploring emotions, how we express and interpret them, and how they can manage them to help build successful, respectful groups.
Religion
In religion our Year 4s have been looking at the different parts of a Mass. They have been making connections between the parts of Mass, their families routines when they gather together, the Last Supper, and the Eucharist. They have been making Venn Diagrams to show their understanding of the similarities and differences between these things as well as the importance of the parts of these different gatherings. The students unpacked the ‘Sanctus and created an art piece showing a part of a prayer that speaks to them.
Our Year 3s have been continuing their work around reconciliation by looking at The Way of Mercy and the steps of the sacrament of reconciliation. They have been exploring the four steps in The Way of Mercy in both their own experiences and through The Prodigal Son. They have also been learning about reconciliation as a sacrament in preparation for many of them to complete their first reconciliation.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing our Year 3s and 4s have been learning about their emotions. They have been exploring how they can feel comfortable and uncomfortable emotions. They have also been learning how to positively affect the emotions of others, through their actions and attitudes towards each other.
