Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One

It has been a jam-packed two weeks for the 1/2 students. There have been many different celebrations, such as Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, as well as Clean Up Australia Day, our first whole school assembly and our first of four Inform and Empower Sessions.

In Literacy, we have finished looking at the Noni the Pony book series by Alison Lester. We explored text-to-self connections, where we had to think of a time in our lives when we had done something similar to Noni, Coco the cat and Dave the dog. Linking to our Inquiry unit on heath, the text ‘Everyday Heroes People who help in my community’ written by Melissa Reve was also explored. We thought about the heroes in our lives and who our trusted adults are. In Little Learners Love Literacy, we explored the phonemes ‘ee’ and ‘ea’, as well as ‘y’.

During Maths, numbers have continued to be the topic of conversation. We have explored many different ways to represent numbers over the last two weeks. We have looked at and worked with numbers by bundling them with icy pole sticks, MAB blocks, number bonds, and tens frames.

In Religion, we had our first Godly Play experience of the year with the story of The Lord's Prayer. We then looked at the Our Father line by line to investigate what each line means. The week was ended by rewriting the Our Father in our own words.

During Inquiry, we have continued to look at emotions and how we can promote the health, safety and wellbeing of ourselves and others. We spoke about seeking permission, such as asking for hugs and how we can either give or deny permission in a respectful way.

In Wellbeing, we have continued discussing emotional literacy. We played the Emotions Statue Game, where many different faces were shown to portray different emotions such as happy, sad, angry and worried. We also made Kindness Pots where we wrote what we could do for other people when they are feeling upset or lonely.

We had our first whole school assembly. Well done to the 1/2 students who received a Value Award for displaying the three school values and to Ludoh for receiving Aussie of the Month!

On Monday the 24th of February we had our first Inform and Empower Session. We hopped online to watch Ollie Online, where we learnt about the internet, feelings we may experience while on the internet and trusted adults. More information and conversation starters that can be used with your child are below.

OLSC had our very own Clean Up Australia Day event! The 1/2 students went and picked up rubbish in our carpark. Thank you to all the students for helping clean up our school and making sure that the rubbish goes into the bin.

We celebrated Shrove Tuesday by eating some delicious pancakes. Everyone enjoyed them and thank you to the adults that helped make them for us.

We had an Ash Wednesday liturgy where we received the ashes on our foreheads. We spoke about how Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent.
