Prep News

Learning Centre Three

As we reach the end of our first full week of school, it is amazing to see how settled the preps are becoming and all the new friendships that are being made, both in the learning spaces and on the playground.

Literacy

We have been enjoying reading and exploring some books by Joy Cowley. We have read about all the tricks that Smarty Pants can do, the disgusting things that the Meanies get up to and the very noisy animals in The Farm Concert.

Phonics

We have met some more of Milo’s friends: Ally the alligator and Peter the penguin. Ally also introduced us to our first vowel sound /a/, which we have been using to read and write words, like Samam and map. You might like to play games, such as I Spy, at home to practise the sounds that we have learnt so far this term.

Maths

We have been learning how to count forwards and backwards 0-10 and 10-0. We have practiced writing the numbers and have used a range of materials to represent each number, such as tens frames, number cards and icy pole sticks.

Religion

On Tuesday, we celebrated Shrove Tuesday by eating pancakes. We all enjoyed choosing different toppings to place on top of the pancakes. On Wednesday, we commemorated Ash Wednesday at a liturgy where we received ashes on our foreheads which signifies the beginning of the season of Lent.

Inquiry

We have been exploring healthy food choices. We looked through catalogues and decided which foods we would include in a healthy lunchbox. We then made a delicious fruit kebab using bananas, grapes, strawberries and mandarines. YUM!

Wellbeing

We read the story The Color Monster and identified the different emotions that the characters in the story were feeling. We then created our own colour monsters and described how they were feeling. We also modelled how we can show different emotions using facial expressions and body language.

Buddies

A favourite part of our fortnight is buddy afternoon! Last week, our year 5 buddies joined us for a shared lunch and brought with them a book to read.

We saw our buddies again on Monday for Clean Up Australia Day. It was wonderful to see the relationships forming between the older and younger students.

Technology

On Tuesday, we participated in a live online incursion with Inform & Empower. Karly, Ruby, Damo and Goose the Moose reminded us about the steps that we can take to ensure our devices do not get damaged. We also learnt that when we are sharing our device with another person, it is helpful to have different roles, such as driver and navigator

.
