During planning week in Term 1, students in Year 3/4 and 5/6 designed Auslan First Aid posters, with a focus around emergency signs. When someone is injured or sick, communication can be difficult. We seek to eliminate any additional communication barriers that may arise when the person needing the care uses Auslan as their primary means of communication.
What a fantastic day we had at Newport Lakes Reserve! Our little explorers had a blast discovering the hidden gems of this beautiful oasis right in our backyard.
The weather was warm and perfect for our adventure. Our eager Year 1 students put their senses to work, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. They were thrilled to spot some of the local residents, including adorable blue fairy wrens, sunbathing blue tongue lizards, and majestic swans gliding across the lakes.
Our budding historians had a field day connecting the dots between the park's past and present. They collected tiny pieces of glass, reminding us of the reserve's former life as a rubbish tip. Sharp eyes also spotted plenty of bluestone, a nod to the park's quarry days.
The stepping stones across the lakes provided an exciting challenge, though a few hats decided to go for a swim! Note to self: maybe we should bring fishing nets next time for hat rescue missions!
We couldn't have had such a wonderful excursion without our amazing parent volunteers. A massive thank you to all who joined us – your help made this day possible and extra special for the kids.
Our students were absolute superstars throughout the day, showing great enthusiasm and respect for nature. We're so proud of how they embraced this hands-on learning experience.
In the classroom we have been learning about the beautiful plants and animals at Newport Lakes, such as black swans, blue-wrens, ring-tailed possums, sugar gums, acacias and casuarina trees. Students have been able to make fantastic connections to their learning by making triangle dioramas of the reserve and completing a gorgeous Newport Lakes Walk booklet full of great writing tasks and fun activities.
Here's to more adventures and discoveries in our local community!
