Year 3 Spotlight

Team Building Incursion
As part of our ongoing inquiry into making a positive contribution to our community, students took part in an exciting incursion focused on developing essential teamwork and personal skills.
Through a rotation of engaging challenges, students explored communication, problem-solving, resilience, and leadership in action. Importantly, students were guided to reflect on their individual strengths and how these helped their teams succeed—deepening their understanding of what it means to make a positive impact within a community.

Writing
Students have begun exploring the unique features and genres of graphic novels.
Through reading and discussion, they are discovering how authors and illustrators use a combination of images, layout, and selective word choice to tell engaging and meaningful stories. As part of this unit, students will plan and create their own graphic novels, with a strong focus on developing narrative through carefully chosen dialogue and text. To support this creative process, they will also take part in a special incursion led by a professional cartoonist (Brett Cardwell from Cardytoons) who will guide them in bringing their main characters to life through expressive illustration and design.

Numeracy – Statistics
For the first two weeks of term, Year 3 students were learning all about gathering, displaying and interpreting data. We explored the different types of graphs we can use to display data, practised reading and interpreting different graphs, all before embarking on our own data journey.
We designed and refined a data collection question related to science, sustainability, or the environment and then surveyed our classmates, recording our findings in a tally. We then learnt to hand draw a bar graph before exploring using ICT to create a digital bar graph. We then used our graphs to write ‘true statements’ about our findings and displayed all of this work on our Data Project Posters. Have a look at some of them below.
