Visual Arts News

Hello Families,

What a fantastic and busy few weeks it has been! All grades have embarked on new and exciting art projects, exploring innovative techniques and developing new skills. It's been wonderful to witness the students' enthusiasm and creativity shine through their work.

Grade Prep

Our Prep students have been experimenting with pastels to create galaxy-themed backgrounds, adding star constellations to their artwork. They also drew inspiration from the story The Chameleon's True Colours by Yuliya Pankratova, using paint slicks to apply colorful patterns observed in the story onto their chameleon.

Grade One

Grade One students have been learning about Fauvism, an art movement characterized by the use of bold, bright, and often unrealistic colours. They created vibrant cow artworks inspired by Italian artist Claudio Malacarne. Additionally, they experimented with blending primary colours to make secondary colours while creating a colour wheel lion. Next week, they will continue this project by adding faces to their lions.

Grade Two

Grade Two students have also been exploring Fauvism. They began by drawing their own giraffes, dividing them into sections, and colouring them with bright pastels to achieve an unrealistic effect, inspired by Claudio Malacarne's artworks. They experimented with adding white pastel over the colours to create tints and blended primary colours to produce secondary colours, painting them in the correct order on the colour wheel.

Grade Three

Grade Three students have been learning about texture, organic shapes, and muted colours by creating reflection artworks inspired by Australian artist Belynda Henry. They used cool and natural watercolours, experimenting with creating their own muted colours by adjusting the amount of water. White pastel was used to add texture and enhance the reflection effect beneath the horizon line.

Grade Four

Grade Four students have been learning about organic and geometric shapes in art, practicing forming their own organic shapes while creating lava lamp artworks. They also practiced adding value (tint and shade) to the base using pastels and blending techniques. During this project, they experimented with creating gradients with watercolours and using only analogous colours. They have also begun their gemstone art project, starting by sketching their own geometric shapes, which will be painted next week using watercolours, where they will learn how to add value using this medium.

Grade Five

Grade Five students have been experimenting with a new material, Modroc, to create 3D art pieces based on natural disasters. They began by sketching their chosen natural disaster on a canvas and then used Modroc to build up a 3D area. Once dried, they began painting their creations using acrylic paints. Students demonstrated great perseverance throughout this project, overcoming challenges associated with using Modroc.

Grade Six

Grade Six students have been working on an art project inspired by Vincent van Gogh. They studied the famous painting Starry Night and used it as inspiration to create their own starry night scenes using Modroc. They used a range of techniques to shape their Modroc onto paper and have begun painting their pieces using acrylic paints.
