Grade 6 Community News

Dear families,

We are well and truly into the swing of things for the term. Grade 6 is such a fun and action-packed year, which can fly by and be over before we know it. It is important that we take the time to pause and appreciate what a fantastic job each and every one of our students are doing so far this year. We are proud of the people that our Grade 6s are becoming and can’t wait to continue kicking goals and making memories.

Knowledge Building

We have continued our unit on the French Revolution. We have been looking at the events the led to the beginning of the revolution and having rich class discussions to solidify our understanding. Students have discussed the impact that a monarch with total control can have on a population and explored reasons why the French people were so upset with the way that their country was being run.

Our debating has continued, with students focusing on the importance of building a well structured and thought out argument, and practicing how to deliver their thoughts in an effective way. Students have enjoyed the opportunity to work collaboratively and use their public speaking skills to explore ways to persuade others of their opinions.

As we head into Week 5 we will begin our new units of learning for Knowledge Building. We will dive into Roald Dahl’s “Boy: Tales of Childhood” where we will unpack the ways in which an author can use a variety of literary techniques to engage readers when writing an autobiography. This will link to our writing unit where we will be unpacking and writing biographies.

Mathematics

Our unit on Time has wrapped up, where students developed and practiced the skills required to interpret and plan journeys using timetables. Students were required to demonstrate the ability to calculate elapsed time and duration to the minute.

This week we began our first unit on Fractions. In this two-week unit, we will learn how to compare and order fractions by converting them to the same denominator. We will be using strategies like doubling and halving to help with this. Students will also explore how to use the highest common factor and lowest common multiple to find common denominators. A key focus will be understanding the size (or magnitude) of different fractions and showing them on number lines.
