Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,
Thank you to all our families that attended our PLC 5 open hour today. It was great to share our economics learning with you!
Upcoming events:
- Pupil Free Day : Friday 30th May
Knowledge Building
After our successful economics unit in week 5 we are moving onto our term 2 novel study of Inside Out and Back Again. Inside Out and Back Again is a partially autobiographical novel by Thanhha Lai about a young girl fleeing the Vietnam War and starting a new life as a refugee in America. Students will use the text to prompt discussion on character decisions, author language choices and symbolism.
In weeks 5 and 6 students will be working on decimals. We will begin by working with tenths and hundredths in decimal notation and then move to working with thousandths. They continue to focus on place value and magnitude to develop their understanding of decimal fractions. They will be supported in these skills by using place value charts, place value counters and number lines.
Respectful Relationships
This term we have been working on positive coping strategies. Students develop language around coping, critically reflect on their coping strategies and extend their repertoire of positive coping strategies. Topics coming up will be problem- solving, stress management and help seeking.
Reminders
- Student journals will not be being sent home this year. Students will write their reading in the journals when they arrive at school each day.
- Please purchase a copy of Inside Out and Back Again for your child before the beginning of week 5.
