Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,
Warm Greetings! We hope everyone has a positive start to the term. As we move into Weeks 3 and 4, it's a great time to check in, set some goals for the term, and continue building on the fantastic work our students have all been doing. This newsletter contains important information and highlights some of the exciting things happening in the classroom.
Knowledge Building Unit - Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.
As we delve into Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon. We have been exploring the importance and creation of the Aboriginal Peoples First Nations Flag as a symbol of identity and unity as part of the cultural sensitivity of the curriculum.
Before we read the text, students make connections and predictions to help them to understand the character's point of view, and also, this reading strategy helps them to remember what they are reading.
In writing, we have been writing a factual recount of the Aboriginal Flags' history. We are following the structure of persuasive texts to affirm the learning we have already done. Part of factual recounts is learning the correct time connectives. For example, afterwards, eventually, last month, and before. This is helping with our writing and understanding chronological order.
Numeracy—Division
In math, we have begun a new unit; fractions! We have been learning how to identify and write unit fractions of a shape and collection. Specific vocabulary for fractions; part, whole, denominator, numerator, equal, fraction help cement our understanding of the content. I encourage you to discuss fractions with your child at home.
Vocabulary
This term, our target words are provided from our novel study, Yirra and her Deadly Dog Demon. Our week 3 words were glare, scramble, serious, defend, misbehave, and excitedly. Our week 4 words are agreement, rumours, disastrous, distract, blushes and putrid.
Students enjoy sharing their learning of these words with you, and we encourage you to support and surprise them by using these words when the opportunity presents itself.
Friendly Reminders
● We ask students to read for 20 minutes each school day and then record their reading nights in their student reading journals that we keep at school to track their reading nights. Young readers who read frequently develop essential reading skills.
● We thank and remind families to continue to support their children in charging their iPads and bringing their headphones ready for each school day.
● In weeks 8 and 9, we have our upcoming excursion to the Melbourne museum, please make payment & give consent ASAP.
