Year 6 News

Reading
In Reading students have been focusing on inferential and literal questions. We have been using our class novel to ask liertal questions such as; who is the main character? Where is the story set? etc . Students have also been asked to develop inferential questions by using their prior knowledge of a text.
“Inferential questions are questions that use our prior knowledge and clues from the book to answer.” Rania 6E
Writing
The Year 6 students have explored writing narrative stories which has been an exciting and creative process. It allowed them to explore their imagination, develop their writing skills, and express their ideas in a structured way.
We started off by students generating ideas using their writing seeds for their narratives, considering characters, settings, and plots. Students were able to use CANVA AI to create their own writing prompt image and use this to plan their narrative stories.
Students then planned their stories using story mountain, maps and graphic organisers to organise their ideas. Once their writing was complete, students revised and edited their work, focusing on aspects such as plot development, character development, and descriptive language. Peer editing was a valuable aspect of this process, allowing students to receive feedback from their classmates and make suggested improvements.
Finally, students published their narratives. This was done through various means, such as creating a class book, or a digital copy. Publishing gives students a sense of accomplishment and allows them to share their stories with a wider audience.“My story is about a tiny person and his partner, who is a sewer rat, stopping a mutant dinosaur” - Sarthak 6E
‘We have been using our ideas and writing lots of different stories. I have learnt more about punctuation.’ Alyra 6D
“I enjoy using my imagination to write stories” Mason 6A
“My friend and I have been able to write a story Part 1 and Part 2 using what we have learnt about Narratives’ Hannah 6A
Maths
The Year 6 students have been busy working on their division skills in maths. This involved students being able to divide multi-digit numbers and giving answers with remainders. Students worked hard to understand how division relates to multiplication (inverse operation). They also solved worded problems that involve everyday situations.
We are now moving on to the topic of graphing and data. The grade 6 students will be learning about how to read and interpret different types of graphs and data sets. We look forward to teaching them the importance of using graphs to show data based on real life scenarios.

Inquiry
Over the past two weeks, our Year 6 students have further their exploration into the abyss of space. They have explored space through amazing inventions like satellites, space stations, and NASA missions. The students have been curious about how satellites help with things like GPS and weather tracking, and they’re also discovering some of the challenges. Students have been thinking about how innovation continues to shape our understanding of space. It’s been a fun and inspiring journey

Social and Emotional Learning
This week in SEL, our focus was on how we use character strengths to navigate everyday challenges and how we can show appreciation for caregivers, especially around Mother’s Day.
Students revisited key strengths like Humour, Determination, Honesty, Courage, Loyalty, Compassion, Generosity, and Creativity. Through real-life scenarios, they identified which strengths could be helpful and offered advice on how to use them. For example, when someone feels nervous about public speaking, strengths like bravery and persistence can make a big difference.
Students also discussed the importance of online safety, reflecting on discussions from our police visit last week. Students created posters promoting how to be safe online.
We also explored the origins and meaning of Mother’s Day, discussing how it’s celebrated around the world and what it means to each of us. Students reflected on the role of caregivers and shared
Special Events
Mothers day stall
Students attended our annual CPS Mother’s Day Stall last week. Students had the opportunity to choose from a wide range of gifts for our mums, grandmas, aunties and other special people in our lives. During class, we also carefully crafted heartfelt cards to show our appreciation and gratitude to the wonderful people who do so much for us. We hope everyone had a wonderful day celebrating with family, filled with love, cuddles and lots of chocolates!
