Year 5 News

Reading
Over the past two weeks, Year 5 students have wrapped up our focus on summarising nonfiction texts. Students have learned how to identify the main idea of nonfiction texts by looking for repeated ideas and key details. We’ve also moved onto inferring, where we are practising using text clues, like dialogue, facial expressions, body language, and character actions, along with our own knowledge to infer a character’s feelings and motives. This will help us make deeper and more meaningful connections as we read.
“Inferencing is fun because you get to use your imagination.” - Zach 5D
“To inference you need to use your prior knowledge and text clues.” - Suhavi 5A
Writing
In Writing, we have been continuing our learning on how to plan for and create information reports. We have been looking at how to organise our ideas clearly using headings, subheadings and paragraphs. To put our learning into action, we have all chosen a planet to research and have gathered lots of interesting research such as, what our planet is made of (gas or rock), who discovered it, whether it has any moons or rings, what features it has (like storms, volcanoes or canyons), and what the temperature is like.
It has been really helpful connecting our Inquiry topic ‘Our Place in Space’ to our writing, as it gives us a real reason to research and write. Our prior knowledge will support our understanding when we begin exploring our solar system more deeply in the coming weeks in Inquiry. Check out some of our work in the pictures below - we’re excited to share what we have done so far!
“Mercury is the smallest and fastest planet in our solar system.” - Josh 5C
“Pluto shrinks 2 cm per year and it is smaller than its own moon.” - Prish 5C
“I enjoyed getting to pick our own planet to write an information report on. I found it really interesting to learn about our solar system” - Reema 5D
“I really liked learning about planets as I didn't know much about them. So writing an information report about them I have learnt a lot.” - Aroosh 5D
Maths
This fortnight in Maths, we have continued to explore our topic of Time! We have looked at how to read and represent times on both analog and digital clocks. Students have also practised drawing and reading times to the nearest 5 minutes and have learnt how to convert between 12 hour and 24 hour time formats. We have really enjoyed learning how to read bus timetables and calculate the duration between one stop and another. Being able to read timetables and calculate time durations will help us plan better, make travel decisions, and manage our time effectively in the future.
“I found working on time fun easy.” - Aroosh 5D
“I liked playing time Bingo.” - Zach 5D
“I learned about 12 hour and 24 hour time. It was a little bit tricky however it slowly started to get easier and more interesting!” - Chelsy 5C
Inquiry
In Inquiry, the Year 5 students have continued their learning on understanding the impact of both natural and human-made events on extreme weather events and how these events affect the Earth’s surface. We have been particularly diving into climate change and how human activities, especially the use of fossil fuels, contribute to it, and how climate change can intensify extreme weather conditions.
It has been great to research and collaborate in groups to create presentations about different natural disasters and reflect on how our learning connects to real world environmental challenges.
“Fossil fuels are a source of energy.” - Riyansh 5B
“It was fun working with our friends to complete an interesting Inquiry project.” - Aleisha 5C
“There are 20 types of volcanoes in the world!” - Ushman 5C
“We researched about floods and learnt what causes them.” - Emmerson 5C
Social and Emotional Learning
Over the past two weeks, we have been exploring character strengths and working in groups to role play them. We focused on strengths such as kindness, perseverance, and courage, demonstrating how these strengths can be applied in real life scenarios. We have discussed the importance of identifying and using strengths to overcome challenges, both inside and outside of the classroom. Through interactive activities and group discussions, we have gained a better understanding of how to use these personal strengths to handle challenges and support people around us.
“I enjoyed acting out the character strength of Honesty with my friends.” - Jethro 5D
Special Event
Mother’s Day Stall: In week 3, we attended the annual CPS Mother’s Day Stall. We had the opportunity to choose from a wide range of gifts for our mums, grandmas, aunties or any other special person in our lives. During class, we also carefully crafted heartfelt cards to show our appreciation and gratitude! We hope everyone had the best day celebrating, filled with love, appreciation, and lots of lovely gifts.
“I appreciate my mum because she always gives me everything in a heartbeat so it is time to finally give back to her after everything she has done for me. I love you so much Mum!” - Holly 5C
