Foundation News

Reading
The Foundation students continue to strengthen their skills with segmenting, blending, and decoding. They have been working hard to apply these skills as they navigate through consonant-vowel-consonant words. Students have been demonstrating great resilience when attempting to decode some of our new high frequency words. As they continue building words with the new sounds they have learned, such as r and u, Foundation students have been highlighting how they segment the sounds and then blend them together. The students actively identified words using the ‘r’ sound as they ran a lap around the basketball court. It was very fun!

Writing
This week in Writing, the Foundation students have been learning about dominant sounds, the strongest sounds we hear in a word. They practised listening carefully to words like PAT, KIN, and MOS to identify these key sounds. Students also listened to a list of words without looking at them to practise writing the dominant sounds of each word. Well done Foundation students for showing confidence and support for your peers in your spelling!

Maths
During Maths, Foundation students learned about the friends of 10. As a class, they created a rainbow, using each colour to pair up different numbers that add up to 10. Students have also been exploring their own questions to ask their peers and using tallies to record the answers. It was exciting to answer all sorts of questions from peers as they explored numbers!

Inquiry
In Inquiry, Foundation students explored the concept of families and how they can be different. They met Neesha, Harry, and Sarah, a family from a story the class read, and counted how many people are in each of their families to compare family sizes. Using block towers, students created a simple block graph to visually represent the number of members in their families. Foundation students discussed what each block stood for and how the graph helped show the similarities and differences between families in our classrooms.

Social and Emotional Learning
This week in Social and Emotional Learning, our Foundation students explored the big topic of emotions! They talked about what emotions are, when they might feel them, and how they can
manage those tricky feelings like anger, sadness, or fear. Students enjoyed acting out emotion statues, showing what anger or sadness might look like with their bodies, then sharing ideas about how to calm down and feel better. The Foundation students shared a variety of calming strategies such as taking deep breaths, asking for help, or cuddling with a teddy.

Special Event - Mother’s Day
Last week in Foundation, students were busy creating something special for Mother's Day! Students were invited to draw a big heart in the centre of their cards. As they showed their creativity, they tore coloured paper into small pieces and carefully glued them inside the heart to create a beautiful mosaic-style design. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the love and appreciation we have for our mums and special carers. We hope you enjoy these heartfelt mother’s day cards!
