Solway Science News

Solway Science Fair Friday 23rd of May at 2pm

All Solway community members (current and future parents, grandparents, family members, Solway students) are welcome to visit our Science Talent Search students and view their wonderful Science projects. These projects will be on display in the learning room (Room 3) next to the Prep classrooms. Please come and have a chat with the amazing, brilliant students who love to celebrate Science at Solway!

Robogals Day Program at Monash University

See below some photos of our Robogals Day Program at Monash University. Mrs. Watkins and I were so proud of the way that our Year 4s and Year 5s conducted themselves at Monash University on April 4, (the last day of Term 1). Our students learnt about all the different, amazing Engineering pathways and they had the opportunity to solve their own real-world Engineering problems. Using coding software, our students worked in teams to complete several challenges, ending in an exciting LEGO Spike Prime robo-competition. They were encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ when thinking about using futuristic sustainability technology to create environmentally-friendly homes and communities. They blitzed the Kahoot questions about women’s contributions to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Great work, Solway Robogals team!

Term 2: Earth Sciences

This term, our students are learning about the following Science topics. Each topic is matched to suit their age and appropriate year level, to maximise understanding.

The topics are:

Prep – Weather

Year 1 and Year 2 –  Water Works (A Day in the Life of a Water Droplet)

Year 3 and Year 4 – Beneath Our Feet (Rocks, Minerals and Soils)

Year 5 and Year 6 – Creators and Destroyers (Volcanoes and Other Natural Disasters)

Kitchen Garden Science/Biological Science/Science as Human Endeavour:

Our Year 3 -Year 5 students looked at plant specimens with their magnifying glasses and magnified viewing boxes. They then drew their specimens after watching a presentation about scientific drawing methods.

Here are the amazing scientific drawings of Mollie (5D), Annabelle (5D), Tom J (5D), Luca (4M), Edith (4M), Amelia (3D) and Poppy (3D). What a brilliant start!

There were many more wonderful drawings from our Solway students, which will be kept safely in our science journals for future viewing.
