From the Classroom

Grade 5/6 Charcoal Explorations

Grade 5/6 students have been diving into the expressive world of charcoal drawing. Through a series of hands-on lessons, students explored the unique properties of charcoal and how it can be used to create dramatic effects through tone and shading.

They learned techniques for blending, smudging, and layering to create depth and contrast in their work. Their focus project—a charcoal portrait—challenged them to apply these skills thoughtfully, bringing life and expression to their drawings by carefully manipulating light and shadow.

Grade 4 Portrait Prints

Students explored shape, space and balance while learning about Cubism and the artist Georges Braque. Students used foam sheets and cut these into shapes to construct a cubist style portrait and created a print with their portrait using water soluble markers and water. Next week we are going to explore printing with paint sticks.
