What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?

At Bridgewater PS, we are working to support students to build capacity with their Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Students learn Social and Emotional skills to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. SEL is made up of the following elements-

  • Self-awareness,
  • Social awareness,
  • Responsible decision-making,
  • Self-management and
  • Relationship skills

The information below gives more detail about what each of these components looks like and what specific skills are associated with the element.

One of the current programs we use to help build our students’ Social and Emotional Learning is the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR).

The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) learning materials are designed for primary and secondary school teachers to help them support students learning around recognising and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and establishing and building frameworks for positive relationships. This aligns with the Personal and Social Capabilities of the Victorian Curriculum and is taught through a variety of role plays, games, discussions, activities and scenarios.

The RRRR learning modules include 8 Social and Emotional Learning topics across all levels of primary and secondary education. These include:

  • Emotional Literacy
  • Personal Strengths
  • Positive Coping
  • Problem Solving
  • Stress Management
  • Help Seeking
  • Gender and Identity
  • Positive Gender Relationships

These skills are most often learnt through positive interactions (and modelling) from influential people in a child's life- family, friends, teachers, coaches, peers etc. and often need to be explicitly taught and discussed for the skills to become second nature.

The RRRR program is an important way we help to support students to be socially and emotionally literate. These sessions run weekly in both the Junior and Senior classrooms.

For more information, feel free to touch base with your child's classroom teacher, or alternatively, Mr Lehane, or Miss Coffey.
