Last week in the Community Hub, we held a belated Eid celebration! We were delighted to welcome Humaria and Zoe from the Mental Health and Wellbeing Local team, who joined our wonderful group of women, teachers, and the leaders to celebrate together. The event was filled with delicious food, and a warm sense of community. A big thank you to everyone who generously brought a plate to share! Humaria also surprised us with a raffle prize - and a lucky winner took home a hamper full of goodies!
It was a great opportunity for the women to connect with Humaria and Zoe, who shared the exciting news about their upcoming Active Aunties program, running for the next seven weeks. They also let us know that in Week 2, we will be hosting a Consultation Session, where the ladies can share what they would like to learn about and explore during the program.
Additionally, at the Heights Campus, the playgroup had the opportunity to attend our Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, facilitated by Uncle Mark. The Smoking Ceremony is an ancient tradition practised by Aboriginal communities. Both children and parents walked through the smoke, embracing its positive and welcoming spirit. Many parents deeply appreciated the experience, drawing meaningful connections to similar smoking rituals from their own cultural backgrounds.
To commemorate ANZAC Day, students in the English class tried their hand at baking ANZAC biscuits while learning about the history and significance behind the ingredients used. They thoroughly enjoyed exploring this part of Australian history—and agreed the biscuits were delicious! Meanwhile, the children in playgroup took part in a creative activity, making poppy crafts to mark the occasion.
Lastly, we congratulate our next round of Volunteers who undertook a week of training and induction. They familiarised themselves with our schools’ processes and policies and explored our commitment to Child Safety and Wellbeing. The students also learned about our emergency evacuation procedures, food safely handling and allergies. The next intake for volunteers will be next term and if you are interested, please contact Julie.
