International Women’s Day is a time to recognise the strength, determination and achievements of women across all industries. This year, we celebrate the journey of Belle Hatcher (baker photo), a passionate and dedicated apprentice who is proving that with the right support and mindset, success is within reach.

As an apprentice through the Headstart program, Belle has embraced the opportunity to turn her passion into a career pathway. Headstart, designed to help students transition from school into meaningful employment, has given Belle the chance to gain hands-on industry experience while continuing her education. For Belle, it has been a stepping stone toward independence, confidence, and a future in a field she loves.

As we celebrated International Women’s Day, Belle Hatcher’s journey reminds us that success is built through persistence, support, and belief in oneself. She is not only shaping her own future but also inspiring other young women to pursue their passions, break stereotypes, and step confidently into their chosen careers.

OPEN NIGHT - VCE VM STUDENTS MAKING AN IMPACT!

Every year, McClelland College hosts its annual Open Night, but this year’s event was truly next level. In challenging conditions, students prepared and served over 700 hot chocolates and cooked more than 450 sausages. Their organisation, teamwork, and positive attitudes ensured that guests were well looked after and left with a great impression of the school.

Staff vs Year 12 Student Events

The energy was high and the competition fierce at this week’s staff versus student Pictionary showdown, as both sides battled it out in a game full of creativity, quick thinking, and plenty of laughs.

The staff came out strong, taking an early lead thanks to some impressive sketching and sharp guessing. Their momentum continued when they secured a bonus point after the students were unable to correctly guess a drawing within the allotted time - a moment that had the staff team feeling confident.

However, the students refused to back down. Showing great teamwork and determination, they gradually clawed their way back into the contest, eventually tying the game and forcing a dramatic sudden-death decider.

With everything on the line, Mr Hemsley stepped up to the board. His artistic skills were put to the test as he produced a drawing that either team could guess. In a tense finish, it was the students who managed to land the correct answer first, securing a thrilling victory.

The event was a fantastic way to build school spirit and provided plenty of memorable moments for everyone involved. Looking ahead, the final event for the term will see staff take on students in European handball in Week 10 - a perfect way to round out a fun and competitive first term.

DEAKIN UNIVERSITY CAM PUS TOUR & PRESENTATION

Interested Year 11 students recently had the opportunity to visit Deakin University for an engaging and informative campus tour and presentation. During the visit, students explored the university grounds and facilities, gaining valuable insight into campus life and the range of courses available. Students were surprised by the size of the campus and how much walking was involved. Highlights were the mock court room, nursing and exercise science facilities. As it was ‘O’week on campus there were also many stalls offering free food.

The presentation provided an overview of different study pathways, entry requirements, and future career opportunities, helping students to better understand their options beyond secondary school. This excursion was a valuable opportunity for students to begin considering their post-school options and to build confidence in navigating future education pathways.

FRINGE FESTIVAL - PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SKILLS (PDS)

Year 12 VCE VM students proudly showcased their creative responses in a culminating exhibition exploring the impact of technology on society. Over six weeks, students researched, developed and produced works that examined how technology influences social and cultural norms, diversity, relationships, and individual perspectives.

The exhibition featured a diverse range of mediums, including installations, films, photography, paintings and drawings. Each piece reflected thoughtful inquiry and personal interpretation, highlighting both the benefits and challenges technology brings to modern life. Students demonstrated creativity, critical thinking and a strong commitment to their projects throughout the process.

As part of the event, students not only presented their work but also engaged with the community, confidently discussing their ideas and artistic choices. They took full ownership of the exhibition, organising, setting up and managing the space, which created a professional and welcoming environment for visitors.

Held in Week 10 of Term 2, the exhibition marked the finale of a challenging yet rewarding term. It was a celebration of student voice, creativity and growth, and a testament to the hard work and dedication shown by the entire class.
