Recognising Harmony Day

Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr

by Sara Azimi and her family, including Arzoo (Grade 6 from 2025)

Ramadan is a very important and holy month in Islam. During this month, Muslims remember when the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammad. Ramadan lasts 29 or 30 days, depending on when the new moon is seen. The Islamic Calander follows the lunar cycle, so the dates change every year.

During Ramadan Muslims:

  • Fast from dawn until sunset (don't eat or drink for the whole day)
  • Pray more and read the Quran
  • Help the poor and give charity.

The fast each day begins with a meal before before sunrise called Suhoor and ends at sunset with a meal called iftar.

The things I like to do in Ramadan is helping tohers, family and community time, spiritual reflection, gratitude and the peaceful atmosphere.

A the last of Ramadan when we see the moon we celebrate Eid al-Fitr

First day of Eid al-Fitr the people come together in the morning and go to the mosque and pray the special Eid prayer with the community. We also:

  • wear new outfits
  • give Zakat at al-Fitr
  • visit family and friends
  • give money to children

The things I like most about Eid al-Fitr are:

  • wearing new clothes
  • vising family and friends
  • as children getting money from elders

I like to celebrate Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr with famly and friends. We wear special and new outfits and eat day friuts and make some special foods to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
