Student Learning

Year 5/6 in Term 1
In Reading, students developed their understanding of both fiction and non-fiction texts. They practised key comprehension skills such as summarising, making connections, analysing and inferring, as well as locating and using information from texts. Students also built their reading fluency by increasing their words read per minute. A strong focus was placed on helping students identify genres they enjoy and supporting them to select books that were appropriate for their reading level and interests.
This term, students focused on writing descriptive narratives, with an emphasis on crafting detailed and engaging sentences. They then moved on to persuasive writing, which was linked to our integrated studies topic. Throughout the term, students followed the writing cycle by generating ideas, planning, drafting, editing, revising and publishing their work.
In Spelling, students learned about prefixes and applied a range of spelling rules, including the correct use of apostrophes.
In Numeracy, students developed their understanding of Number and Algebra, including place value, decimals, and multiplication and division. They also explored Measurement and Space, focusing on concepts such as area, perimeter, length, mass and capacity. Throughout the term, students solved worded problems and built a strong bank of problem-solving strategies, allowing them to test ideas, explore mathematical conjectures, and explain and justify their thinking.
This term, students explored Civics and Citizenship, including Australia’s democracy, compulsory voting, and the roles of the three levels of government. They considered what it means to be an Australian citizen, explored local issues and ethics, and completed a project researching a community problem and proposing possible solutions.
