Respect, responsibility and kindness

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

At Bendigo Primary School, we introduced our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework two years ago. While we are still in the early stages of development and implementation, we are already seeing positive progress. SWPBS is a proactive, evidence-based approach that supports improved social, emotional, and academic outcomes for all students. It focuses on explicitly teaching positive behaviours, recognising and rewarding respectful actions, and providing targeted support where needed. Families play an important role in reinforcing these behaviours at home.

Key Aspects of SWPBS for Families

Common Language: At Bendigo Primary School, we use a shared language to promote expected behaviours across all settings. Our core values are Kindness, Respect, and Responsibility.

Positive Reinforcement: Staff acknowledge students who demonstrate expected behaviours through verbal praise and ticks, helping to build a positive and supportive school environment.

Supporting Your Child Through SWPBS

Communication: Stay connected with your child’s teacher to understand the school’s behavioural expectations.

Consistency: Where possible, use similar positive approaches at home, such as setting clear expectations and encouraging positive choices.

Collaboration: We welcome family input and involvement in our SWPBS processes to ensure a consistent and supportive approach for all students.

Benefits of SWPBS

  • Improved school safety, attendance, and student wellbeing.
  • Increased time for learning and stronger teacher–student relationships.
  • A greater sense of connection and belonging for students.

Term 1 Focus

Our whole-school focus this term is on our value of Responsibility, with a particular emphasis on following instructions. Our shared mantra is: “First time, every time.”

Teachers have been revisiting and explicitly teaching our lining up and transitioning routines to support students in successfully following instructions the first time—every time—no matter where they are or which staff member they are working with.
