Year level Update
This Newsletter featuring Year 1
In Year One we are demonstrating how clever we are and how much we have progressed since the start of Term One! We have no time to waste, we are busy writing recounts and narratives, as well as solving tricky addition and subtraction algorithms. We are also deeply immersed in our Religion and our Inquiry Unit called ‘Sustainability’.
In English we have been looking at different types of writing genres and their purposes. We are currently exploring narratives. We are learning that narratives are a form of writing that are written to entertain the reader. We know that narratives have an orientation, a series of events with a problem and at the end there is a resolution. This week we are writing stories about Robots!
In Maths, we have been learning about time. The students enjoyed a fun launch game called ‘Sit down September’ where the students had to line up and state the months of the year in order and if you called out September you had to sit down. The students have learned that there are 52 weeks in a year, 10 years in a decade and 100 years in a century. We then learned to identify the features of an analog clock and that there are 60 minutes in an hour. We are beginning to tell the time to the hour on an analogue clock and we encourage parents to practice this with the Year 1 students. They will be telling the time in no time!
In Religion this week we are learning about Saint Mary MacKillop. She was known for her compassion and commitment to helping those in need. We created a medal which was a wonderful way to celebrate this remarkable woman and her achievements.
This leads us to our Inquiry unit. In our Inquiry Unit we are focusing on the theme of Sustainability. We are learning about the different parts of a plant and what they need to grow. We also learned about the importance of water for these plants and how we can make a conscious effort to conserve water by taking showers instead of baths, turning off the tap when we brush our teeth and collecting rainwater to water plants. We created STEM posters to promote saving water and the students did a fantastic job!
Olympics Day
In week 3, the grade one students participated in our very own Olympic competition. Mr. Greene challenged them with events including the one-legged race, the hang, and the long throw. The students embraced the challenge and showcased their athletic abilities throughout the events.
The one-legged race was a close contest, with some very tight heats. Students used their arms and legs effectively to power themselves to the finish line. The final race was a photo finish, with Jai emerging victorious after a stewards' inquiry.
The hang was a grueling challenge, but the students demonstrated remarkable endurance. Every student set a new personal best and showed great determination to stay upright for an extended period. Albie ultimately secured the gold medal after hanging for well over two minutes.
The long throw was another closely contested event, with all athletes throwing impressive distances. Both underarm and overarm throws were on display, with all students performing at a high level. The gold medal was within reach for many, but Judd ultimately broke the previous record set by Mr. Greene earlier in the year, throwing his bean bag the full length of the basketball court.
Congratulations to all our athletes for their endurance, determination, and hard work throughout the competition. We look forward to the next installment of the Galilee Olympics in the future.
