At the beginning of Term 3, our Prep/1 students started a humanities unit on the 7 continents of the world. Just as there are many different kinds of plants and animals, there are also many different kinds of people in our world. People have different beliefs and different ways of celebrating important events. They eat different foods and wear different clothes. At the same time, all people share one important characteristic: they are human beings.
Just some of the questions we have explored in this unit are:
- Where do people live?
- What kinds of celebrations take place in The United States of America, Mexico and Canada?
- What would you most like to see in Europe, and why?
- What is the name of the highest mountain in the world, and where is it?
- How would you compare the landscape in Australia to that of Antarctica?
Each week, we have explored a different continent, reading about what celebrations, food, animals and landscape can be found in that continent.
Students then find the continent on their world map and colour it in.
At the end of each lesson we play the 7 continents song which has become a favourite part of our week! I find myself with this song stuck in my head for days.
