School SleepOut at Optus
Members of Team St George's were buzzing with excitement as we gathered our sleeping bags and cardboard boxes for the annual Anglicare Sleepout at OPTUS Stadium. The event was designed to raise awareness around Youth Homelessness and to raise funds to keep the Street Connect Bus on the road.
As the sun set, we set up our makeshift shelters. We chatted and shared stories and laughs, but then the reality of the situation soon began to sink in. The night was cold, and the hard ground beneath us was uncomfortable. We knew, however, that we were only experiencing a fraction of what people experiencing homelessness endure daily.
Throughout the night, we huddled together to keep warm. As the hours passed we talked about why they were participating, reflecting on the importance of helping those less fortunate than ourselves. And, some of us even got some sleep.
By morning, Team St George's had raised nearly $8,000. Though tired, we were filled with a sense of accomplishment. As we packed up our sleeping bags and cardboard, we knew the money raised would go a long way in supporting Anglicare.
Thank you to Ms Jonas, Fr Gift and Mr McBride for accompanying us and helping us to work towards making youth homelessness a thing of history.
