Science Week

A Week of Discovery and Excitement

Last week, Trinity College celebrated National Science Week, with students from all year levels engaging in a series of events designed to ignite their passion for science.

The week kicked off with a thrilling Kahoot quiz during recess, where students tested their knowledge across various scientific fields. The quiz was a fun and competitive way to start the week, with everyone keen to showcase their science smarts.

Tuesday brought a spectacular demonstration by Mr Abordi, who left students in awe with his "Astonishing Acts of Atmospheric Annihilation”.  In a dramatic display, Mr Abordi crushed a 55L steel drum using dry ice, offering students a powerful lesson in the forces of nature.

The Paper Plane Competition was another highlight, drawing a crowd of aspiring engineers. Using their understanding of aerodynamics, students crafted paper planes that soared across the Foley Centre, exploring the principles of flight in a hands-on and engaging way.

Mr Dodd and the Year 11 Physics students challenged participants with the "Beat the Sensor – Can You Outsmart Technology?" activity. Using motion sensors, students tested their skills against advanced sensors, tackling a series of tasks that pushed them to think creatively and analytically.

The Science Escape Room proved to be a crowd favourite, requiring teams to solve a series of science-based puzzles under time pressure.  This event emphasized teamwork and critical thinking, with students collaborating to crack the codes as quickly as they could. Throughout the week, several junior school classes teamed up with Mrs. Fenwick’s Year 10 science class to tackle the Escape Room.  It was truly special to watch the Junior and Senior boys interacting and engaging with each other. PCG classes were also given the opportunity to combine their general knowledge to participate in the PCG quiz.

One of the most anticipated events of the week was Mr. Marston’s Exploding Science Show. His captivating demonstrations, centred around the use of liquid nitrogen, with a boiling point of -196oC, mesmerized the audience. Students witnessed fascinating chemical reactions, from the hardening of flowers and bananas to the expansion and contraction of balloons and fiery hand demonstration. The grand finale featured an explosive display of ping pong balls bursting from a tin can, leaving the crowd both entertained and educated.

Science Week at Trinity College was a resounding success, thanks to the enthusiasm of both students and staff. The week not only celebrated the wonders of science but also inspired many future scientists in the making.

Auxiliary News

What a wonderful Auxiliary Morning Tea last Friday – another opportunity for over 180 guests to share a yummy morning tea as a community, and enjoy an insightful and encouraging talk about the use of native bush tucker as every day ingredients. Our special thanks to Dale Tilbrook, who regaled us with her wisdom, knowledge and wit as she shared the nutritious qualities of the ingredients in the carrot cake with lemon myrtle and chocolate brownie with wattle seed – so healthy!

Our sincere thanks to those who supported the event – Heyder and Shears, WA Good Food Guide, Kailis Jewellery, and all in our school who donated prizes, food items and their time, as well as our Year 10 waiters, who were awesome in their service role! Our treasurer, Jo Sanfilippo is busy tallying up the figures (for the last time!) and we will share our fundraising efforts later in the year.

As part of this event, the Auxiliary also chooses a charity to raise funds for, in keeping with our theme each year. With gratitude, we have raised over $1,000 for Yorganup, WA’s first Aboriginal run foster care agency, supporting children and families.

Lastly, we were extremely happy to be using our new dishwasher, which cut the clean up efforts in half – with many, many thanks to TC Property Services Manager, Mr Dave Mercer, and the entire Maintenance team for getting it in and up and running.

Our next meeting is on Monday 26 August at 8.30am in the TC Boardroom (Level 3, Cultural Centre), and we will be holding our AGM on Monday 14 October – if you would like to participate in the Auxiliary Committee or just come along to find out what we do, we would love to have you!

President, TC Auxiliary
