News from Three/Four

Literacy

We have been continuing to focus Literacy activities the past few weeks on our class novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Students have been learning note-taking and summarising skills, and continually expanding their bank of word choices with regular vocabulary studies. We have reached an exciting part of the story - what is the challenge that Iron Man has planned for the Space-bat-angel-dragon that is currently lying on Australia, blanketing its citizens in darkness? We will have to wait until next week now to find out!

Maths

Students have been working with symmetry this week, exploring both reflection symmetry and rotational symmetry of regular and irregular shapes and patterns. Although a little overwhelming at first, students were able to manipulate shapes and count the order of rotational symmetry - the number of positions a shape could be rotated and appear the same before completing a full rotation. During the remainder of this unit, students will draw and make models of three-dimensional objects and explain and compare the geometric properties.

Inquiry

Students have worked hard to design Balloon-powered Cars using their knowledge of forces. We can't wait to see them undertake the building process next week!

Tabloid Sports

Despite the wind today, the Tabloid Sports day was a great opportunity for our year 3/4 students to work together as a team.  Many of the activities involved them communicating together, building up strategies and working together to complete the activity.

The first activity was a combined effort where all students had to work together to collect a ball from a location (without the wind rolling it away) and pick it up using 4 stretchy handles and elastic.  This was achieved very quickly and lots of cheers erupted as they collected the ball and placed it in the tub.

Next they participated in a range of activities such as chicken throwing,  creating a skeleton relay, Rob the nest and then a competition between schools for tunnel ball. Our school competed well, but Harry joined another school to make up numbers and received a ribbon for his team's efforts. Well done Harry for participating well and joining the other school.

Later in the day they participated in Captain Ball, Obstacle courses and corner spry .

The year 3/4 students should be commended for their great resilience, determination, sporting attitudes and cooperation today!
