Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Term 3 is racing by with only a couple of rounds left. On Saturday we hosted St Patrick’s College in tennis and basketball, and out to Ipswich for the gala day at St Edmunds. We performed strongly in all three firsts matches with some real excitement in the basketball in a tight tussle where we unfortunately went down by a point after leading for the entire match. Tennis had a comfortable 7-1 win, and the rugby league firsts winning 32-16 in a strong team performance. Across the board it was a successful day for Marist with all three sports dominating.

Last Thursday night we had our first track and field meet of the season. Some strong performances from Marist boys on the back of two full days at QSAC for the Met North championships highlight our strength in depth. Well done to all boys who made the Met North team for the upcoming state championships.

This weekend we are playing against St Laurence’s College which will be a big challenge for all of our teams, something we are looking forward to with rugby league at St Laurence’s fields at Runcorn.

We also wish our open hockey team well as they take on St Edmund’s College in a repeat of the 2023 grand final of the Brisbane Schoolboys competition this Wednesday, where we will be hoping for a bit of revenge.

Integrity and Fair Play in School Sport

Sportsmanship, an essential aspect of competitive sports, encapsulates the spirit of fairness, respect, and integrity in athletic endeavours. It is the glue that holds the values of sports together, ensuring that competition remains a positive and enriching experience for athletes, spectators, and society at large. This article delves into the significance of sportsmanship, its core principles, and its impact on athletes and communities.

At its core, sportsmanship embodies the ideals of ethical behaviour, respect for opponents, adherence to rules, and graciousness in victory or defeat. It's more than just playing by the rules; it's about maintaining an attitude of respect, empathy, and humility throughout the sporting journey. True sportsmanship extends beyond the field of play, influencing personal growth, social interactions, and the larger sports culture.

Core Principles

  1. Respect for Opponents: Sportsmanship emphasizes the recognition of the efforts and skills of opponents. Treating opponents with respect fosters an environment of healthy competition and camaraderie.
  2. Fair Play: Adhering to the rules and regulations of the game is vital. Displaying honesty and integrity, even when it might lead to personal disadvantage, demonstrates the true essence of sportsmanship.
  3. Humility: Whether celebrating victory or dealing with defeat, humility is a central tenet of sportsmanship. Acknowledging the role of hard work, practice, and teamwork over individual achievement contributes to a well-rounded sports experience.
  4. Grace in victory and defeat: How athletes handle success and failure speaks volumes about their sportsmanship. Celebrating wins with modesty and accepting losses graciously highlights a deep understanding of the transient nature of sports.

Sportsmanship has a profound impact on athletes' personal development. It instils values that extend beyond the playing field, including empathy, resilience, and discipline. When athletes prioritize respect and fair play, they contribute to a positive sports culture that encourages inclusivity and sportsmanship among peers.

Moreover, embodying sportsmanship can enhance an athlete's mental resilience. The ability to stay composed under pressure, accept defeat with grace, and persevere through challenges is a testament to an athlete's character and sportsmanship.

Promoting sportsmanship requires a collective effort from athletes, coaches, parents, and staff. We all have a part to play in making sure the boys develop their capacity to be the best people that we can be.

Sportsmanship is the lifeblood of sports, infusing the playing field with integrity, respect, and fairness. Its principles enrich athletes' personal development and foster positive communities centred around shared values. By actively promoting and nurturing sportsmanship, we contribute to a sports culture that thrives on the ideals of mutual respect, healthy competition, and the pursuit of excellence.

Met North Track and Field Regional Trials Summary

Marist was well represented at Met North with over 170 entries across the two days of competition. There were some pleasing performances from a number of athletes and not just those who won medals, but those who showed they can achieve a big personal best when competition pressure is dialled up.

However overall, it was a highly successful meet with 53 medals counted so far. Below are some key performances from those winning more than 1 medal included -

  • Mason Loli - Year 5 winning 2 medals in shot and discus.
  • Xavier Simms winning the open 100m and 200m double.
  • Nate Griffin had perhaps his biggest meet with 4 medals with 2 gold in long jump and triple jump plus medals in 100/200 combination - well done!
  • Joel Drew winning the 400m and a close second in the 100m.
  • Aiden O'Reilly a gold and bronze in javelin and discus respectively.
  • Isaac Roach with medals in 400m, triple jump showing versatility.
  • Ben Caughley collecting a medal with each colour Gold-Silver-Bronze across the 3 jumps. Starting to build nicely to AIC.
  • Lyndon Maynard with Gold-Silver-Bronze in the three jumps in 16 years.
  • Jack Mahuru also with a treble of 2 silver and a bronze in 16 years jumps building on his already strong year and representation for PNG.
  • Isaiah Burgess - winner of 17 years shot put and silver in javelin.
  • Sania Elisala in 400m (bronze) and gold in long jump.
  • Connor Campbell - strong placings and 2 medals across Long jump (gold) and 400m (silver).

Hopefully capturing all the multiple medal winners and the full list of medal winners plus those competing so well throughout the two days. The students should be celebrated for their achievements; 53 medals is the best return at Met North by the team exceeding the 45 won in 2023. Well done to the entire team for their performances!

New College Record

Congratulations to Year 5 student Patrick Thirgood who broke a longstanding College Track and Field record last week at the Met North Track and Field Regional Trials. Patrick ran 28.92s in the 10 Years 200m eclipsing a record set by Simon Poole back in 1996. A fantastic achievement.......and well done to both Patrick and Simon for their incredible athletic accomplishments.

AIC Practice Meet #1

After a strong Met North showing a number of athletes chose to rest or only do 1-2 events while other athletes took the opportunity to record times and distances. Another strong showing from the athletes including:

  • Hugh Sutton fast in the 100m backing up after two days at Met North.
  • Guy de Putron and Quinn Schroder-Davis running into good form in both throws as well as sprinting pushing for positions. Guy ran a brave 400m at Met North just outside the medals.
  • Connor Campbell, Nate Griffin, Shea Caminiti and Charlie Campion looking strong along with all the hurdles squad.
  • A fast 100m and 400m combination from Rocket Kruisdyk.

Thanks to the athletes plus also the coaches and support staff who attended to support the athletes to reach their best. There is another meet this week (Wednesday) and we hope to finalize camp lists as well based on performances. The team is working well at this time and request all athletes continue to go to meets and also attend training.

Round Up – Round 5

This week the senior Marist teams played against St Patrick’s at the beautiful and picturesque St Edmund’s fields in Tivoli. Our juniors travelled to the furthest fields away from Tivoli to play their games at Shorncliffe.

As the season has progressed and we are nearing the end of the season, every game matters for premierships and season aggregate. Our junior teams had a mixed bag of a day winning half their games. A special mention goes to the 7B team who dominated with a 40-0 resounding victory and congratulations go to Man of the Match Gearge Saunders. Another special mention goes to the 6A team who went down narrowly but played exceptionally well. Over the other side of Brisbane saw our senior teams have a much better day after starting off poorly with a 6:00pm-4:00pm defeat in the Year 8 game. After that Marist won all 4 games comfortably. Well done to Theo Knight who was Man of the Match for the undefeated 2nd XIII.

1st XIII Wrap Up from Lachie McCall – Vice Captain 1st XIII

The 1st XIII travelled to Tivoli for a game they expected to win but knew that St Pats always try their best against Marist every time they play us. Starting off strongly, Marist slowly started to move away from aspects of our game that have given us so much success this year. It took some solid effort from our middle forwards and some luck out wide before Marist started to show their ability. By mid-way through the second half Marist had the game well and truly in their grasp and ran away 32-16 victors.  Special mention goes to our captain Jasper Barry and Man of the Match Tom Howard.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

Another perfect Queensland day to start our Week 5 matches off against our friends at St Patrick’s College.

It was great to welcome Br Chris back on deck after an absence last year.

St Pats are one of the big movers for improvement in their program which I would like to commend the efforts of Mr Edward Russel for putting some pride and passion back into their team. Although Marist one easily in the end, this match was entertaining and more challenging then the scoreline displayed.

Our second team having a draw and our third team winning a tight battle also.

Of our 15 matches played over two days Marist I am happy to report won 10 matches, drew 1 and lost 4.

Praise must be given to our primary boys this week with a clean sweep of both Year 5 and 6 teams.

Our Year 5A and 5B teams both undefeated this season.

MVP for Year 5 is Leo Scuderi and Year 6 Hardy Marks.

Our Years 7 and 8 teams had it a lot tougher with both Year 8 teams losing to a very good team. Our Year 7 team though lost the A but won the B to keep the 7B team undefeated and top of the table.

MVP for Year 7 is Pedro Chadud and Year 8 is Aarav Patel.

Our Year 9 and 10 had their second home game for the season with both our Year 9 teams winning easily and keeping our 9B team undefeated also. 9A in second position.

Year 10 had a tougher match and unfortunately our 10A team falling to their opponents in the end but our Year 10B team winning and are second on the ladder.

MVP for Year 9 is Oscar White only dropping two games across his 3 matches.

MVP for Year 10 is Toby Campbell and Jackson Skinner. Both boys played like they were out there to win and showed the form that had them in the A team at the beginning of the season. Keep it up boys.

Our Open team MVP awards are for this week,  2nd IV Harry White. 3rd IV is Jordan Pratt.

Our 1st IV player of the round is awarded to: Fletcher Wessling. Well played this week.

1st IV - Captain Report by Henry Lambley

After a week off, last Saturday we played our second home game of the season against St Patrick’s determined to win after our tough loss last match.

A strong start by Lachie and Fletcher 6-0 in their doubles, and a comeback win from myself and Hamish, 7-5 left us 2-0 up after the first doubles putting us in a strong position to start the day.

I finally got a win at number 1, overcoming my opponent after a close start 6-4, 6-1. Hamish and Fletcher had convincing wins at number 2 and 3, 6-0, 6-1 for Hamish and a pair of donuts, 6-0, 6-0 for Fletcher, putting us 5-0 up and in an unlosable position.

Lachie had a topsy turvy game but ultimately went down against a strong number 4 opponent 8-10 in a match tiebreak. The final two doubles both went 6-1 highlighting the whole team’s strength and improvement in doubles.

Overall, this left us with a convincing 7-1 win where we showcased our strength and skill to defeat strong opponents. This week we take on a highly talented St Laurence’s team away, where we aim to solidify our current second place position.

For his outstanding performance on the day, and only dropping one game, Fletcher Wessling is the MVP for Round 5.

AIC Training Days

A friendly request to all parents: punctuality is key! It’s tough to warm up as a team when students are strolling in 5-10 minutes late. A simple solution—get the boys out of bed 15 minutes earlier. It’s great character-building for now and the future. We’re striving to create a culture of teamwork and an environment where everyone thrives, but that’s tough when latecomers disrupt training. Let’s all work together to build a winning team, on and off the court!
