What's been happening in the Performing Arts Room?

Foundation students have been exploring elements of music including; Rhythm (sound, silence, long, short, steady beat), Tempo (fast, slow), Pitch (high, low, pitch direction, distinguish between speaking and singing voice), Dynamics (loud, soft) and learning about the different sounds percussion instruments can make.

Year One students have been revisiting Rhythm and Beat (clapping, tapping) and introduced to music notation with percussion instruments. Students have performed individually and in small groups, demonstrating their ability to play the music they see on a screen. Singing and dancing have also added to the fun during sessions this term.

Year two students explored and experimented with the elements of music through movement, body percussion, singing and playing instruments to create music ideas. They created patterns in music, identifying and clapping out an eighth note, quarter note, half note and whole note.

Year five students have explored musical artists and genre through the decades. Students have been working on their individual projects, selecting a musical artist, working through a detailed rubric to produce an information poster about their chosen artist. Oral presentations to the class will be in weeks 8 and 9 of this term, where students will showcase their work to their peers.

Year 6 students have been exploring ways of combining the elements of music using listening skills, voice and a range of instruments, objects and electronically generated sounds to create music. Students were introduced to the ‘Garage Band’ app on the iPad. They learned how to use Live Loops, Drums and Beats, Smart Guitar, Audio Recording and how to mix and generate effects to create their own compositions in a genre of their choice.
