Our knowledge unit all about the Olympics has wrapped up and what a fun filled four weeks it has been! The Year 5 students have been cheering on their favourite teams to medal glory, as well as keeping track of their combined medal tally. We have learnt a lot about sportsmanship and resilience in defeat by watching how our athletes manage the disappointment of not receiving a medal. In saying that, Australia has surprised everyone with a record number of gold medals. “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi Oi!”
Using all we have learnt about the modern Olympics, students have planned, researched and drafted an information report about their favourite sport. Sub-headings have included famous Olympic athletes, past gold medal winners, rules of the sport and fun facts.
We continue to daily review previously learned concepts. These activities are delivered quickly and are designed to assist our students to retain more information. We cover a range of topics such as: homonyms, word sums, synonyms, antonyms, rhyming words and parts of speech, amongst many others.
A big focus this month has been solving a variety of problems involving the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). Students worked through a selection of word problems, by identifying what the question was asking, then going through the steps required to solve them. More recently, BODMAS has been our primary focus. Some students initially found the concept a little difficult, but persistence paid off!
We have continued to engage in a range of mapping activities. Students have used simple scale to calculate distance, can describe direction using compass points and record the location of objects on a grid map using coordinates.
All year 5 students have been learning about the meaning of empathy and how to demonstrate that value to others. They know that, in order to be an empathetic person, they need to imagine what it would be like to be in someone else’s situation. Kindness is already one of our school values, but we’ve also engaged in activities that have reminded us how to be kind to ourselves and to others. In small groups, students have planned and recorded a short film describing empathy and kindness. Some classes may choose to share these creations with their foundation buddies classes.
Auslan has introduced us to the signs for days of the week and months of the year. We also learnt some new and exciting signs for numbers. We already knew how to count to 50, but added in larger numbers, the highest being 100!
