Year 2 Term 3 - August Newsletter 2024

We are halfway through this term and have been deep into learning so many new concepts!

Literacy - Little Learners, Writing and Knowledge

In Literacy, we have been working through stage 7.4 phoneme and graphemes. The last three weeks we have been learning about the long vowel sound ‘a’ as in chase to the gate /a/ and acorns in April /a/; and the long vowel sound ‘i’ as in five strikes /i-e/ and find a giant /i/. We have also been learning graphemes that make soft ‘s’ and ‘g’ as in space city racing /ce/ /ci/ (including /cy/ as in cycle) and ginger cat allergy /ge/ /gi/ /gy/.

In Writing, we have been learning about the structure and language features of information reports.

In Year 2, we focus on the structure of an information report having:

  • A title
  • An opening sentence that tells the reader about the topic
  • Facts organised to make sense (possibly grouped in blocks of text with subheadings)
  • Image linked to topic

We have also reviewed parts of speech that we can use to add detail and meaning to information reports. These are listed to the right.

We have practised writing this genre using facts about the Olympics over the last three weeks.

In our Knowledge Unit, we have really enjoyed watching the Olympics as they have happened in Paris! We have been learning about different sports, watching highlights and some live events while cheering on the Aussies and keeping track of our medals. On Friday next week we will be enjoying our own Olympics day that the Year 6 students have organised which will be a lot of fun!

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been continuing to learn about multiplication. We know that multiplication means ‘groups of’ and we can use repeated addition or skip counting to find an answer.

We have also continued to develop our understanding of time by reviewing half past, quarter past and quarter to as well as fractions of halves, quarters and eighths. We know that all fractions parts need to be equal and that we can find fractions of shapes, items and collections.

SEL and Auslan

We have been continuing our Social and Emotional Learning through the Resilience Project this term, focussing on being mindful and bouncing back when things are hard. We have practised different ways of being mindful such as quiet colouring or drawing, listening to music and following guided mindfulness sessions.

In Auslan we have spent time learning the signs for different sports and making connections between these and the Olympic sports we were watching in Paris. Ask us at home to share some of these sport signs with you!
