Literacy
Meerkats Production
Last Friday 16 August, Prep -2 were front and centre for a Meerkat Production of the Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) awarded book, 'Timeless' by Kelly Canby. In the book, Emit is surrounded by busyness. Dad is too busy to read stories, Mum is too busy to play games and Emit’s brother and sister are simply too busy doing nothing to do anything, at all. Emit tries everything he can think of to get more time, he tries to catch it, wait for it, but it’s not until Emit tries to buy some time that he learns the secret which is, if you want time, you have to make it.
Dazzling Dan
On Monday 19 August, Solway students had the pleasure of enjoying a magic show from Dazzling Dan the magician. Following the presentation, students used the experience as a writing stimulus, creating many exciting stories featuring magicians just like Dan and possibly even a few evil magicians!
Book Week Craft
Students have read many of the 2024 CBCA books for this year and last week they had the opportunity to create Artworks related to these books. From sewing to painting, our students have enjoyed combining their love of reading with the chance to create expressions of their understanding of each text.
'If I were a horse' - Year 1 & 2

Raymond J Batholomeuz
Brian Nankervis, also known as Raymond J Batholomeuz, visited Solway on Wednesday the 21 August. Parents might know Raymond J from his regular spot on ‘Hey, Hey, its Saturday’ or the the TV show ‘Let the Blood Run Free’, popular in the 90’s. A previous Primary school teacher, Brian shared his love of theatre and poetry with the captivated and entertained students of Year 3-6, however undoubtedly the highlight of the session was Raymond getting the teachers up to dance!
Book in a day
Thursday 2 August, 10 selected Year 6 students worked tirelessly from 8am until 8pm to write and illustrate a book in a day. This competition raises much needed funds for the Kids Cancer Project. Students must write an original story including specific parameters provided that day. All books form part of a digital library made available to children in hospitals around the country.
