PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Last night our school community came together for STEM night as part of Science Week. Despite the imminent evening rain we had a strong turn out from our school community. It was fabulous to see students and their families investigating science together. Curiosity and problem solving are two great learning and life traits to build in our children. Last night was also a wonderful opportunity for our families to connect with each other and our staff, strengthening and building important relationships. Thankyou to Mr Nolan, our STEM teacher, for organising this event for our school community.
This week also saw our AFL 9s participate in a round robin competition against teams from other local schools. When the players returned their success conversations were around everyone playing together as a team, everyone getting a touch of the ball and the strong sportsmanship shown towards others. A terrific representation of the positive shared values instilled between school, home and Mr Watt in Phys Ed.
Whilst school is strongly about developing the foundational skills needed to be competent readers, writers and mathematicians. It also about providing our students with opportunities and experiences. Over the last week this has included students sharing their work at the Coleraine Art Show, participating in the Gray Street’s Got Talent auditions, completing the Australian Maths Competition or the ICAS English and Maths Tests. Part of our journey through life is finding our passion. Schools are a great place to help children try different opportunities and experiences that they might not normally get to do. Thankyou to our staff for sharing their passion with our students and helping grow the whole child.
As we head into the middle of the term there seems to be a few illnesses starting to bubble up across the school. We are aware that several families have been impacted by colds and flus, including Influenza A. Plenty of rest on weekends is important to stay well, or get well. As we head into finals for many sports over the next few weekends this can be challenging. As such, look for the moments of down time for your children where you can across the week.
Next week is Book Week. As is tradition we will celebrate this event with our annual Book Week Parade. This will take place in the stadium at 9:00 on Wednesday. This week’s theme is ‘Reading is Magic’. Students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book or wear a ‘magical costume’. Thankfully due to Instagram and Pinterest there are lots of simple ideas for parents to build uncomplicated and creative costumes from. We remind parents and families that they are also most welcome to join us for the parade.
Next week we have the Melbourne Renegades visiting our Year 4 – 6 students in Phys Ed and we also welcome Newcomb Secondary College who will be performing to the whole school on Thursday afternoon.
