Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One

Can you believe we're already in Week 8? This term is absolutely flying by! It feels like we only just got started, yet so much has already happened. There's been a great deal of learning, growth, and excitement packed into these past few weeks—and there's still more to come!

In Literacy, the students have been immersed in the rich tradition of Aboriginal Dreaming stories, exploring tales such as How the Birds Got Their ColoursTiddalick the Frog, and The Rainbow Serpent. These stories offered a wonderful opportunity to reflect on Indigenous perspectives, cultural values, and the power of storytelling. As part of our learning, students practised identifying key narrative elements—beginning, middle, and ending—while uncovering the deeper meanings and messages within each text. They engaged in thoughtful discussions and used a range of comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding. Building on this, students explored the features of a narrative, including setting, characters, plot, and the use of boundary punctuation such as capital letters and full stops. Inspired by the Dreaming stories, each student created and wrote their own imaginative narrative featuring an animal of their choice.

During Maths, students have been practising how to solve both addition and subtraction equations by using number lines. They’ve learned that numbers increase when we move to the right and decrease when we move to the left. By making jumps in tens and ones, they’re developing a clear understanding of how numbers are built and broken apart. We explored the near doubles strategy, where children add numbers close together (like 6 + 7) by thinking about doubles and adjusting by one more or one less. We also practised adding by partitioning, where numbers are broken into tens and ones to make mental addition more manageable.

Throughout Religion, the students have been learning about key figures who have made a lasting impact on the Catholic Church. We explored the life and legacy of Pope Leo the Great, learning about his important role in guiding the Church and defending its teachings during challenging times. Students also investigated the lives of several inspirational saints, including Saint Mary MacKillop, Saint Teresa of Calcutta, and Saint Francis of Assisi. Through stories, discussions, and reflection, students discovered the qualities and actions that led to each of these individuals being canonised as saints. They explored how these saints lived out their faith through acts of compassion, service, and devotion to God.

During Inquiry, students explored how ideas and opinions are expressed through media artworks in everyday life. They examined well-known public art pieces—such as the Big Banang. Drawing inspiration from these discussions, students designed and created their own sculptural artworks to communicate a personal idea or message. This hands-on process encouraged creative thinking, planning, and the use of different materials and techniques to bring their concepts to life. Students then shared their completed sculptures with their peers, explaining the intention and meaning behind their work. In addition, we explored media storytelling from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, focusing on stories such as Little J and Big Cuz
