Year 9 Agriculture - Mother's Day Stall

Just wow! We were overwhelmed by the support from staff and students ordering and collecting gifts from our Mother's Day Stall on Friday!

It was lovely to see so many students excited to purchase a thoughtful gift for their Mums, whilst supporting the school's Agricultural department.

This stall was developed as a result of the Year 9 Agriculture Marketing Assessment Task, where students were required to develop a ‘product in a pot’, along with creating marketing resources for their business & developing appropriate prices for their product.

Students have been preparing for this event since early Term 1, propagating and caring for a range of plants. Students were involved in all aspects of the sale of our products from advertising and collecting pre-orders, preparing plants and bunches of posies and customer service at the stall. We were extremely impressed by their ability to work together and get the job done under pressure!

We hope all Mums had a happy Mother’s Day.

Wingham Beef Week Dress Rehearsal

On Tuesday 6 May, Year 10 Agriculture students participated in a dress rehearsal in preparation for Wingham Beef Week.

The day began with an excursion to Dimmock’s Meats, where students viewed the breakdown of a beef carcase and identified primal and retail cuts of beef.

Upon returning to school, students got stuck into preparing their animals for the afternoon’s mock paraders competition. This enabled students to practise preparing their animals in a timely manner and be provided feedback/tips in regard to their washing, blow-drying and grooming skills.

Once the animals were prepared, students completed mock judging classes in preparation for Wingham. Ms Bright took students for mock meat judging, where students were required to judge four carcases and primal cuts and identify retail and primal cuts of beef.

We were fortunate to have guest judge, Travis Worth, give up his time in the afternoon to run a mock junior judging, beef appreciation and paraders competition for our students. We would like to thank Travis for sharing his knowledge and supporting our students in preparation for this event.

Wingham Beef Week

On Monday 12 May, Year 10 Agriculture students set off to Wingham for a busy week of cattle showing and judging opportunities.

Despite the wet and muddy conditions, I was extremely proud of how these students represented our school and handled different situations over the week.

These students have been tirelessly preparing for this event since early Term 1 – breaking in and training their cattle, developing their parading skills, show preparation, junior judging and meat judging skills. It is a massive effort from all participants involved in making events such as this successful and our students should be commended for their dedication and efforts on the lead up and during the week.

Wingham Beef Week was a valuable learning experience for our students, allowing them to make connections with other likeminded individuals and expand their skills and knowledge in the beef industry.

We are proud of the results achieved by our students and cattle.

Paraders – the 15 and 16 years parader competition was extremely competitive, with over 80 students competing in these age divisions. Congratulations to Charlotte B, Ben C and Sami S, who were selected from their heats to compete in the final for their respective age group. All students should be proud of their parading efforts at this event!

Junior Judging – Congratulations to Alina S who was awarded 5th place in the Junior Judging competition. This is a huge effort as Alina was competing against roughly 80 other students!

Meat Judging – Congratulations to Jeremy H who was awarded 4th place on a count back in the beef judging section of the meat judging competition! Again, this is an amazing achievement as Jeremy was up against over 200 other students in this competition and it was his first time meat judging!
