Lakeside Students RISE Up

Lakeside Students RISE Up

As part of our endeavours to acknowledge and highlight positive behaviour, we present RISE Awards at Flag Assembly each Monday. RISE is an acronym for Resilience, Integrity, Service and Empathy. Each teacher identifies one student who has made a concerted effort to display the attribute of the week. This might be someone who exemplifies it readily, or it might be given to someone who has worked hard to really improve themselves in that area. These are our key character traits for the Primary School which help to reinforce our school behaviour expectations.

R - Resilience

I - Integrity

S - Service

E - Empathy

Parents are welcome to attend our Flag Assemblies, held on the Primary basketball court.

Important Reminders

We kindly ask for your support in ensuring a safe and smooth start and end to each school day. Please take note of the following reminders:

Primary students should not enter school grounds before 8:30am. We’ve noticed some students arriving early, especially with older siblings and heading straight to class. To maintain safety and supervision, all primary students must wait at the school gates until 8:30am.

Playgrounds and the oval are out of bounds before and after school. Even if parents are present, we ask that students do not play in these areas during these times.

Thank you for helping us keep all students safe by following these important guidelines.

Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Year 1 Buzzing with Excitement During Bee Incursion!

Our Year 1 students recently enjoyed a fascinating Bee Incursion, where they discovered just how amazing and important bees really are! The interactive session took students on a journey through the life cycle of bees, from egg to adult and explored the various jobs inside a hive, including the hardworking queen, drones and busy worker bees.

Students got hands-on with beeswax and honeycomb and even got to keep some delicious honey while learning about how it’s made. They discovered how bees act as pollinators, playing a vital role in our food supply and ecosystem.

The incursion also encouraged students to think about how we can help protect bees, from planting bee-friendly flowers to avoiding harmful chemicals in gardens.

It was a buzzing success and left students with a deeper appreciation for our tiny, tireless environmental heroes!

A New Playground is Coming

We’re thrilled to share that a brand new nature playground and sensory garden will soon become part of our Primary play area! This exciting addition will give students even more ways to explore, play, and enjoy the outdoors.

A big thank you goes to our amazing PTFA, whose generous fundraising over the past few years has helped make this project possible. Their support has added a significant boost to our budget and brought this vision to life.

The playground installation is scheduled for the upcoming school holidays, and once it's complete, we’ll begin work on the landscaping and the first elements of our sensory garden.

Veggie Garden Buzzing with Activity

Our Year 3 students, under the guidance of Ms Clarke, have been getting their hands dirty—in the best way possible! As part of our ongoing focus on connecting with nature, they’ve been busy preparing the veggie garden for a bountiful winter harvest. After clearing out overgrown plants and pesky weeds, they’ve planted a colourful mix of winter veggies.

We can’t wait to see what delicious produce grows from all their hard work!

Meanwhile, our curious Year 1 students have been discovering the amazing role insects—especially bees—play in pollination. As part of their learning, they’ll be helping add bee hotels and bee-friendly plants to the garden, making it a buzzing haven for our tiny garden helpers.

It’s wonderful to see our garden growing—and our students learning—together!

A Taste of Germany in the German Room: Year 2 Kaffeetrinken Celebration

On the 5th of June at 3pm, the German room was transformed into a warm and welcoming space for a very special “Kaffeetrinken” – a beloved German tradition where people come together in the afternoon to enjoy a warm drink like coffee or tea with a slice of cake. Our Year 2 students brought this tradition to life in the most delightful way. In the lead-up to the event, they worked hard in class to bake traditional German cakes, learning the German names of the ingredients along the way.

It was a joy to see how they combined their language learning with hands-on cooking skills, even practising a dialogue in German that they used during the baking process.

The results were impressive — and delicious! Families, including parents, siblings and friends, gathered in the German room to enjoy the students' creations.

A special thank you goes to Ben, who took on the role of barista for the afternoon, serving up warm drinks to complete the experience. Most importantly, it was a lovely opportunity to come together as a community, enjoying each other’s company and celebrating both culture and learning.

Vielen Dank to everyone who made the afternoon so special!

Bringing Light into the Darkness: St. Martin Lantern Walk

On the 10th of June at 5pm, the Lakeside Lake came alive with glowing lanterns and joyful voices as our Year 1 students, families and friends gathered for the annual St. Martin Lantern Walk. In the weeks leading up to the event, Year 1 students created their own colourful lanterns in German class. As part of the learning experience, they were introduced to the German names for the colours they used, enriching both their language skills and cultural understanding.

The students also learned the story of St. Martin — a tale of kindness, compassion, and helping others in times of need. Inspired by this message, the lantern parade serves as a beautiful tradition symbolising bringing light into the darkness. As the sun began to set over the lake, the children’s lanterns lit up the path, creating a magical atmosphere. It was heart-warming to see the children reconnecting with their friends, full of excitement, sharing laughs and embracing the moment. It was the best atmosphere to sing the traditional German lantern song the students learnt in class. With a large turnout of families and a glowing trail of lanterns around the lake, the event was a true celebration of community, culture and the joy of learning.

Vielen Dank to all who joined us and helped make this evening so memorable!

Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS)

Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) serves as the overseas aid and development agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia and New Zealand. Through this vital organization, Lutheran communities across Australia and New Zealand have the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of those facing hardship through poverty, injustice and crisis. ALWS works hand-in-hand with communities, supporting them as they build stronger, more sustainable futures for themselves and their families.

We are excited to share that our sister school, Good News Lutheran College in Tarneit, hosted a Walk My Way event on March 30th. This inspiring initiative brings communities together to support children's education in regions where access to schooling can be challenging. If you are interested please see the flyer below.

Here at Lakeside College, we've set an ambitious and meaningful goal for 2025: to help 75 children access education through ALWS. With each child's schooling costing $25, we're aiming to raise $1,875 throughout the year. To achieve this target, we will be organising various service activities and fundraising events throughout the year. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to make a tangible difference in children's lives.

Please stay tuned for updates about our upcoming service activities and how you can contribute to this important cause. Together, we can help create brighter futures for children who might otherwise miss out on the gift of education.

Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge

We are excited to announce the launch of the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge on Monday, 24th March, and will run until 30th August this year. This initiative aims to foster a love of reading among children and students, encouraging them to engage with a variety of books throughout the year.

Since its inception in 2005, the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge has seen over 4.5 million students participate and collectively read more than 63 million books. It is a wonderful opportunity for your child to not only enhance their literacy skills but also to discover the joy and wonder that comes from reading.

The Challenge is designed to cater to the varying reading stages of our students. For children in Prep to Year 2, the goal is to read or 'experience' 30 books alongside their parents and teachers. Students from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read a total of 15 books. To participate, students can either read independently or share the reading experience with a family member or educator. Once a book has been read, you can log into your account to record your child's progress.

In the coming week, we will be sending individual logins to each family, allowing you and your child to track their reading journey. We strongly encourage all families to involve themselves in this initiative, as it not only helps in developing reading skills but also builds a supportive culture around literature within our school community.

Thank you for your continued support in promoting literacy and encouraging a life-long love of reading in our students. Should you have any questions regarding the Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge, please feel free to reach out to your Classroom teacher/English Teacher.
