Supporting Your Teen Through Tests and Exams
With test and exam season approaching, it's normal for students—and parents—to feel a little more on edge. One of the most powerful things you can do as a parent is to offer calm, consistent support without adding pressure. Encourage your child to take regular breaks, get enough sleep, and stick to a study routine that works for them. Remind them that effort matters more than perfection, and that exams are just one part of their learning journey.
Try to keep home a stress-light zone during this time, offering encouragement rather than over-questioning. Remember to let them know that ultimately your love is unconditional, and school is only a small aspect of who they are. Even if they don’t do as well as they hoped, their future is not determined by this. A little reassurance can go a long way: let them know you're proud of how hard they're trying. As author and educator Alfie Kohn puts it, “What kids do is shaped by what they think you value.” When you value balance, effort and well-being, your child is more likely to approach exams with a healthy mindset.
