AGENCY IN LEARNING – DEMONSTRATING DRIVE AND STRIVING FOR MASTERY

Deep learning happens when students are driven not just to complete tasks but to truly master new skills and concepts. At All Saints’ College, we continue to foster agency in learning by encouraging students to take ownership of their progress, set ambitious goals and persist in the face of challenges.

Striving for mastery requires more than just hard work. Mastery involves curiosity, resilience and a commitment to continuous improvement. In the classroom, this means students are encouraged to seek and apply feedback, refine their thinking through revision and push beyond their comfort zones. Whether it is perfecting a musical piece, refining a science experiment or strengthening an argument in an essay, the process of iteration and persistence builds both confidence and expertise.

Parents can support this by celebrating effort and progress rather than just outcomes, reinforcing the idea that learning is a journey. Asking questions such as; “What’s something you’ve worked hard to improve?” or “How did you overcome a challenge this week?” can help students recognise their growth and stay motivated.

By demonstrating drive and striving for mastery, students develop not only academic excellence, but also the habits of lifelong learners. Our learners are ready to embrace challenges with confidence and determination.
