RESOURCE SMART SCHOOL AWARDS

We very excited to announce that BSPS’s Environmental Action Team have been named as a finalist in the ResourceSmart Schools Awards!

The Resource Smart Schools Awards celebrate the legendary efforts and impacts made by schools in sustainability. Our school has been chosen as a finalist in the Student Action Team of the Year (Primary) for their work on fostering environmental leadership and engaging the school and the school community.

We have been invited to attend the awards ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on the 5 June along with the other finalists. The theme this year is ‘Working Together’. Speaking of working together, since 2008, 1,600 ResourceSmart Schools (including us!) have worked together to:

  • save more than $63 million on bills
  • plant more than 5.1 million trees
  • save more than 110,000 tonnes CO2e greenhouse gas emissions
  • divert 100,000 cubic metres of waste from landfill
  • save 1.9 million kilolitres of water.

The ResourceSmart Schools Awards are a joyful and affirming celebration of schools and students and their sustainability triumphs. The awards are the state’s largest sustainability celebration for primary and secondary school students, teachers and school volunteers taking remarkable sustainability action. We are proud to be recognised among the schools doing sustainability work that benefits students, the planet and the wider community alike. ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE (Building & Grounds)

Last Saturday, about 25 parents, carers, and students gave up their afternoon and braved the rain to join our first working bee for 2025. It was lovely to see some familiar faces and to welcome new parents into the fold. It’s amazing what can be achieved with so many enthusiastic helpers!

Not only did we move over 50 barrows of soil—and too many rocks to count—we also weeded, watered, and planted.

The inclusion space is now ready for the contractor to begin construction of the new deck in the coming weeks. We’ll then complete the space with the installation of a student-designed mosaic at the second working bee in Term 3.

You may also notice some new garden beds at the Brunswick Rd entry and fresh planting around the amphitheatre. To give these plants the best chance of thriving, we need your help with watering over the next 12 months. Next time you’re waiting while your child refuses to leave the monkey bars or gaga ball pit, please fill a watering can (located near the junior playground) and give a few plants a drink. Thank you in advance!

And in case you need a little extra motivation to join the next session—it’s not all dirt and heavy lifting! The breaks are definitely a highlight. Special thanks to Vic for the coffee, tea, and “the best cake I’ve ever eaten,” and to Chris for the well-earned beers at the end.

See you at the next one!
