Year 12 Visual Communication Design

As part of their Unit 3 Practical Design Task, Year 12 Visual Communication & Design students recently completed two practical design exercises in response to an open-ended, multidisciplinary brief. These tasks focused on building key skills for future folio work they will undertake in term 2 and 3, particularly in using digital design interfaces.

Students explored real-world design challenges across their chosen design fields, producing a broad range of creative outcomes. From thoughtful branding concepts to immersive museum, restaurant and retail space designs, the work demonstrated strong conceptual thinking and technical skill.

These exercises encouraged innovation, experimentation of materials, and the use of industry-standard tools, with results that reflect the students’ growing talents in this area.

This is also their rationales for their designs (they're quite long but maybe can be condensed as you see fit):

Rida:

Deliverables: Logo concept & isometric perspective of Velora’s recycled shipping container storefront

Description: I experimented with various colour combinations for the logo, overall colour palette and as well as the typography that ensured the company looked high end, elegant and aesthetically pleasing. I have learned through this process the entire design workflow from an idea to the end result, which aligns with many industry practices, especially in pop-up retail and repurposing existing buildings for new use. This practice has helped strengthen my ability to use digital platforms and to share my ideas clearly using visual media, a crucial skill in developing a professional folio.

Abrar:

Deliverables: Logo concept & storefront elevations for Huda Honey

Description: In this project, I explored message and environment skills and methods. I created hand-drawn and digital logo ideas for my brand, Huda Honey, and created a museum floor plan design. I used freehand sketching, digital drawing, and colour exploration with natural honey tones. These exercises are connected to the career path of professional designers who combine creativity with technical skills in order to create sound branding and functional spaces. I was able to develop my sketching, digital drawing, and idea generation skills through these exercises.

Sreetoma:

Deliverables: Floorplan for a rooftop urban farm & low fidelity wireframe of an eco-friendly mobile game.

Description: For this design exercise I focused on the design stage of developing ideas, specifically generation of ideas through visualisation drawings. There are 4 hand drawn sketches of a Rooftop Urban Farm floorplan. Each sketch evolves in its details, starting from simple schematic shapes like circles to more elaborate shapes that define each object within the farm, for instance solar panels, shed and garden beds. Media used for this exercise include pencil, fineliner, watercolour, graphic markers and colour pencils.
