Principal's Report

Term 2 Start
Term 2 began with a great visible staff presence welcoming students back. It has been a very busy term, one filled with learning and growth socially, academically and personally for our students, staff and wider community.
The term has seen a greater focus on students’ expectations in and out of the classroom. This has been visible through a few initiatives, including the uniform implementation and the continual work on classroom shared expectations.
Curriculum Day
Our college Curriculum Day was held on Thursday 8th of May. The theme for the day was ‘Connection and Learning’. This provided all staff the opportunity for professional development, growth and continuity in our improvement in teaching, learning, engagement and wellbeing. The day included renowned guest presenters that explored the ‘Neuroscience of Learning’ and the implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0). Our amazing Education Support staff also explored Wellbeing strategies and connection to learning in the classroom. A series of staff-led workshops concluded the day, allowing staff to incorporate the learnings into their planning and practice.
Celebrating our Diversity
We conducted a flag audit and have identified some flags that were not represented. We have purchased flags of these countries and will be looking to place them up in Barak Building. The flags on display are an important part of our college and a daily reminder of the vast cultures within our students, staff and families that we are so fortunate to have.
Attitude to Schools Survey
As part of our focus on improving learning and wellbeing outcomes for all students, Years 10 to 12 will take part in the Department of Education’s annual Attitudes to School Survey (AtoSS). The survey gathers anonymous feedback on students’ experiences at school, including their views on teaching, learning and wellbeing, and helps inform our improvement efforts. The student feedback is a source of data that we use to inform future areas of improvement and acknowledge and celebrate our areas of strength.
Survey dates (Session 3, regular classes):
- Year 10 – Monday 2 June
- Year 11 – Tuesday 3 June
- Year 12 – Tuesday 10 June
The Parent Opinion Survey and Staff Opinion Survey are made available in Term 3.
School Review
During Term 2, we received our School Review Report that identifies recommendations for future planning. The school leadership team is collaborating with our review team to implement improvements throughout the remainder of 2025.
As a next step of the review process, our school will continue towards developing our new School Strategic Plan (SSP), which will guide our improvement initiatives over the next four years.
Examinations
The General Achievement Test (GAT) will be held on Tuesday 17th of June. It is part of Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority's (VCAA) VCE system and helps ensure the quality of assessments. The GAT assesses a student's literacy and numeracy skills against Victorian standards. This year we will have over 410 students undertaking the GAT.
Semester Exams will be running for Year 10 and Year 11 students between June 10th and 20th. Year 12 students will be completing their Practice Exams from Wednesday 4th June till Friday 6th of June with Unit 4 beginning on Tuesday 10th of June. Students will be provided feedback on their exams with areas of strength and growth identified.
Our Year 11 and Year 12 VCE Vocational Major students will continue structured classes throughout the Examination period.
Year 10 Program
Our Year 10 Program will be running a modified timetable in the final two weeks of this term. This includes our Work Experience Week in the final week of term – Monday 30th June till Friday 4th July. The Year 10 Programs provides students the opportunity to learn about wellbeing strategies, personal and social development skills, career education and experience in the work force. A Career Exhibition will run on Thursday 26th June for students to learn about the diverse options and pathways post senior school education.
Celebrations and Achievements
This term has seen continual growth and achievement for students. These have been represented through school and wider community. Student opportunities include ongoing Wynspeak public speaking competitions, several sporting events, over 20 excursions enhancing learning, national volunteer and nation reconciliation week activities, IDAHOBIT Day lunch, student attendance and achievement awards. We have used cohort assemblies to congratulate and celebrate our student achievements this term.
Acting Principal concluding
Our College Principal Shane Cole-Hayhow will be returning from his leave on Tuesday 10th of June. The role of Acting Principal has solidified my belief that Tarneit Senior College core values of Integrity, Innovation and Focus are lived by all that call this place ‘our school’. I would like to take this opportunity to thank students, staff, families and the wider community for your continued contribution, support and efforts during my time as Acting Principal.
