FAIRNESS

This week at our whole-school Wednesday morning briefing, we spoke about fairness, what it means, and what it looks like in practice. I was genuinely pleased to hear the students' responses; most had a strong understanding of what it means to be fair.

Lately, however, there’s been growing conversation around the idea that some students are treated differently, or that some receive “more” than others. I've noticed how this perception can influence how we treat one another and how we view our peers. This is concerning, as it can lead to disconnection within our TEAM.

Honestly, I want the best for everybody. Sometimes that means recognising that a teammate may need something different, perhaps even a bit more. And if that’s the case, I will make the better choice to accept it and move on. Rather than focusing on whether I’m getting the same, I’ll choose to reflect on how fortunate I am, and how I might be able to support others.

Because the truth is: I may need help and support at some point too. And when that time comes, I believe that the kindness I’ve given will be returned.

Some powerful sayings come to mind…

  • Fair isn’t - everybody getting the same thing, fair is – everybody getting what they need to be successful.
  • Equality is about everyone getting a pair of shoes, equity is about everybody getting a pair of shoes that fit.
Something to ponder.
