Visual Art

Prep

Our Prep students are continuing their exploration of colour this term as well as introducing the element of line. We are focusing on how artists can use colours and lines to express feelings and emotions in their works. The children will view existing artworks, listen to music grabs and look at picture storybooks to inspire our own creations using a range of media and techniques including drawing, painting, collage and printing.

Grade 1

Our Grade 1 students have spent the last few weeks finishing off their stunning Bogong Moth artworks. They learnt about symmetry and combined a range of media including oil pastels, dry pastels, beads, pipe cleaners and natural materials found in the garden to make these eye-catching artworks.

Now we are learning about clay and using some techniques such as rolling, making a coil,

modelling and joining objects to create a ceramic piece.

Grade 2

In Visual Art class, Grade 2 students have been exploring the art and culture of the Ming Dynasty. They learned about the traditional blue and white porcelain vases from this period, focusing on the intricate patterns and fine painted lines that make them unique. Inspired by these historical pieces, students created their own vase designs using careful brushwork to replicate the delicate detailing. To complete their artwork, they printed colourful flowers to fill the vases, combining painting and printmaking techniques to produce beautiful and imaginative final pieces.

Grade 3 & 4

In Grade 3 and 4 Visual Art lessons, students have now finished exploring the vibrant and expressive style of Romero Britto. They created self-portraits using acrylic paints, focusing on bold lines, bright colors, and eye-catching patterns to reflect Britto’s unique approach. To add a personal touch, they embellished their artworks with creative details and they should be very proud of these amazing artworks.

This week our Grade 3s and 4s have begun working with clay to design plaques; the 3s are incorporating printed symbols to tell their own stories through visual language and texture and the 4s are revisiting our time at the Melbourne Garden Show, looking at the intricate designs of flowers and using them as inspiration to decorate a clay plaque focusing on rolling, cutting and joining techniques.

Grade 5

In Grade 5 Visual Art lessons, students have been exploring how art is created for the expression of a huge array of ideas and meanings. To commemorate ANZAC Day, they created torn clay poppies, carefully crafting and joining the petals in these delicate pieces. They are now proudly displayed in the main hallway at school. Currently we are exploring emotional expression in art by studying the work of Ana Falceta. Inspired by her style, students are creating watercolour paintings that convey a chosen emotion, and will enhance their artworks with delicate hand-stitched embellishments for added texture and depth.

Grade 6

In Grade 6 Visual Art lessons, students have been developing their ceramic skills by employing key techniques such as clay rolling, joining, and smoothing. Using these foundational methods, they have been creating small ceramic containers. They are now about to embellish their containers with small additions and scratching as well as adding glazes, allowing the students to explore surface decoration and colour in their finished pieces.
