Year 6

It’s been a productive and engaging few weeks in Year 6, filled with exciting learning opportunities across all areas of the curriculum!
Reading
We recently wrapped up our government unit with a fantastic online incursion led by Monique from Parliament House in Canberra. Students participated in a virtual tour of Parliament and explored how laws are made and what qualities make an effective Member of Parliament. It was a brilliant way to consolidate our understanding of Australia’s democratic processes.
Writing
Students have completed their narrative writing pieces and are now diving into persuasive writing through debates! Current debate topics include “Cats are better than dogs” and “Public transport should be free for all.” Students have shown great enthusiasm and teamwork as they research, plan, and write their arguments collaboratively. We presented our debates today. I’m so proud of everyone for taking on a new topic. We will be writing and presenting another round of debates in the last 2 weeks of term.
Mathematics
We’ve concluded our work on area and perimeter by applying our knowledge in a creative and challenging inquiry task. Students were asked to design a backyard mini golf course, working within specific size and budget constraints. This hands-on project allowed students to think critically, problem-solve, and apply maths in a real-world context.
Wellbeing
In our wellbeing sessions, we’ve been learning how to recognise and reframe negative self-talk. Students wrote thoughtful letters to their “unhelpful thoughts,” acknowledging them but also taking steps not to let them interfere anymore. This activity supported a shift toward a more positive, resilient mindset.
I’m so proud of the curiosity, creativity and collaboration our Year 6 students continue to show each week! I’m especially proud of how our Year 6’s have conducted themselves while carrying out multiple tests and assessment tasks, taking it as an opportunity to show what they can do, rather than approach it as a daunting task.
